got challenged to a 795 vs 10/22 shoot off

so i get my 795 on friday. bought from big 5 on that sale they had. well i told my buddys what i'm getting and they're like "wtf is that? why didn't you get a 10/22?"

told them its supposed to be more accurate and its nearly half the price. and then got challenged to a little friendly wager for a 30 pack...i'm damn good iron sights with a 10/22. (have hit my fair share of clays thrown from a hand thrower with one)

hope this dang 795 this site sold me on can hold its own...

The rear site on my 795 came from the factory off about 10 degrees... but it'll shoot ragged holes with a proper scope. I don't think the 795's irons up to par with the 10/22's, but I will agree I find them to be more accurate.

I would take that bet any day!
But I know my 795, when I do my part it does dime size 5 shot groups at 25 yards with a scope and bipod.

Being that you have never taken it out that's a bit of a risky bet for any firearm.

Make sure you clean the rifle before you shoot it! I would sneak out and test fire your rifle first, get comfortable with it, learn what ammo it likes, learn what kind of hold it likes, ie cover the target or 6 o'clock. Its not unfair to get used to your rifle, they know their 10/22's!

Make sure you have clear rules before hand and an impartial 3rd party judge. Is this going to be a test of best groups or a hit x out of x targets challenge. Bipod or bags allowed, sitting or standing, sling, scope or irons, etc

All that has to be agreed upon, it wouldn't be a fair contest if they are using a scope and bipod and you are shooting irons standing, etc

So if you win do they each owe you a 30 pack? hah

i'm most definitely practicing first for sure!!! hopefully i can get a scope ahead of time. if not i'll make sure he's on iron sights as well. rules haven't been established yet but i'm thinking it will just be tightest group. pretty sure we'll all just show up with 30 packs and after we play, we'll drink them and talk s**t to each other.

recommendations on a decent (decent for a $160 gun) scope?

I shoot groups just fine with the $40 4x Bushnell from Wal-Mart or the Simmons .22MAG 3-9x from Big 5 (about $55ish). If you have just about any half-decent scope that is properly sighted in, factory gun vs factory gun, you'll out-shoot the 10/22 every time.

Sounds like a good time and a win win situation.
I'm still rooting for you, let us know how it goes!

Centerpoints from wallyworld always worked for me. I put one on my ar (.223) And did really good groups at 150yards. Either way good luck let us know who won!

If your buddys 10/22 looks anything remotely like this.....I would back away from that bet.

Shooting competitions with scopes and bench rests doesn't sound all that fun. I would go prone positions with open sights.

he'll definitely have the upper hand since my right hand has 3 pins and a cast...i might just wait till the trigger hand is back to normal before we do this...

If you can, get them to compete for group size rather than points on a set target. The 795 will hold its own against a stock 10/22 any day, but the iron sights are a challenge (we recommend upgrading with Tech Sights).

                          +1 on Tech Sight

A stock 795 with scope will run circles around a stock 10/22, but the stock iron sight on the 795 is not that great (off on mine).

Do a Appleseed challenge with mag change etc...

If you want to go irons Tech Sights are the way to go, I bught a set for my 795 but upon trying them my eyes told me a scope was a better option for me.

                              As for scopes:
I'd suggest the Simmons 22Mag scope series.

                              4x32

                              3-9x32

                              3-9x32 w/Adjustable Objective

I prefer the 3-9x32 with AO so can dial in the scope's focus as close as 10 feet or as far as I can see.
