New 10/22 owner: Options?

Turned 18 yesterday, and dad got me a 10/22 It's a wood 18" barrel version. I'm wondering which route to go with this 10/22. I'm debating with 3 basic options.

- Leave it mostly stock with some small ad ons like an auto bolt release, better sights etc.

- Make a budget target 10/22, try not to get too crazy.

- Take advantage of the 18" barrel and put a folder on it.

Any recommendations? I know a lot of people are gonna ask what I intend to use the rifle for, or something of that nature. At this point, I'm open to all ideas. If you have a recommendation, it doesn't have to be one I listed.

Put in a volquartsen or Kidd trigger in it as well. Easy to install. Nicer trigger pull.

Shoot a few thousand Rounds First Then You will figure Out what Exactly do you Like and Don't like. Might be the trigger or the stock or barrel. or might be happy with it the way it is.

Do a trigger job yourself, install auto bolt while you are there and go to the range and have fun.

Great place to start! I'd start with a trigger job and then attend a two day Appleseed course. Once you've put a couple of thousand rounds through it you'll have a better idea what direction you want to go. For example you could build a "super stock" which is the 10/22 equivalent of a "sleeper" in the car world. Or you could go for something a bit more radical.

Just shoot the crap out of it for a while... Tech sights are another good idea, and triggers are nice and easy... but beware, upgrading your 10/22 can be an addictive and expensive hobby.

Best advice I can give you is to go to an appleseed event. It will make you a much better marksman... there subtopic dedicated to it.

Exact Edge Extractor would be my first mod. Then shoot the heck out of it. It's so accurate in it's stock configuration it's a hoot. If it fails to meet your expectations, then sink some more cash into it.

You mentioned a folder so your thinking Tacticool? your money can be better spent than on a folder.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy a crapload of tactical-ish stuff for it.

I made that mistake, butchered my 10/22, wasted a ton of money, and ended up having to try to make it stock again, and I still am contemplating selling what's left of it for $100 and just buying a brand new one and keep it stock.
