    Kimber Model 82 .22 LR

CMP just sent out an email saying they were offering some unused Kimber .22 for sale. It was funny because I read the ad in the email and got real excited. It said "Rifles are still in original manufacturer's packaging and have never been used, but many of the stocks, barrels, and receivers may have a few light scratches or razor cuts..." I wanted one of those never used in the original package target rifles. Then I went to the CMP site and the Government Unused ones were sold out. The ones that remained were called "rusty". They said possibly some rust in the barrels. I don't know. I'm not excited any more.

Anyone had any experience with these? I was going to get one but I don't really want a rusty bore. They are supposed to be very good target rifles.

    Yes: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=629480

The original offering of these rifles included "rustys" and "pristine (supposedly)". I ordered a rusty and it had no rust whatsoever anywhere, just lots of preservative that was rust colored. Some on rimfirecentral.com who ordered Rustys did have some light rust on the bolt, don't rember anyone saying there was rust in the barrel. Of course I am give no guarantee as to what a person may get. Great shooters for the money. Read the add again, it says they are all unused.

Just to reinforce that - I also only remember reports of occasional light rust in the bolt, and never in the bore. I have two and there was no rust on either one. I'd definitely pull the bolt apart once though just in case. It's a mild pain but you can find instructions online.

If you want a single shot bolt action .22, and you don't want to shell out for a Winchester 52 or a Remington 40x or something like that, getting the Kimber is kind of a no-brainer.

Last rusty Kimberly I ordered from them was pristine new in box never opened, sealed in vpi and in PVC factory bag. No rust, only dried light oil.

OK I just pulled the trigger and mailed in my order for one of these from CMP, with some of their cheap ammo also. I can't wait now to get it.

Here is the link to CMP for the Kimber http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/22targetsurplus.htm.

If you have already bought guns from CMP then you know the drill. If not you need to read their site and go through the hoops and supply the info they want. It isn't that bad really. The most difficult is probably getting past he marksmanship thing. Not that you have to be a marksman but look at the requirement and you'll see. If you're past a certain age that in itself qualifies you. Anyway poke around their site and you'll find the requirements for ordering. Its worth it, especially if you want an M1 Garand.

He is sending me what I need for the marksmanship papers and I signed up for the RWVA so I am waiting for that in the mail also. I'm pretty sure all of the other forms I need are printed out and filled in just waiting to be mailed.

Wonder how many months until I actually get one of these babies home...
I bought one last year and from the time of order to delivery was 2 months. Thing is last time around they were selling 20,000 and were deluged with orders for the Kimbers and other items so CMP was really backlogged. It was definitely worth the wait for me.

Don't delay too long because these CMP Kimbers are a hot topic over on Rimfirecentral.com. Lots of folks ordering them over there. I wouldn't be surprised to see all of them gone by December or before.
