    question on .22 rifle trade

First off, sorry if this is wrong section. Im looking for some answers on what to do if i trade for a Remington Model 597 .22 rifle. Location is California and i would be getting the 22 rifle in the trade. question is: is there anything i need to do to when i get the gun as far as registering it or do we both have to go to a local gun shop and do the transfer together? I want to make sure I own the gun legally and dont have to worry about anything in where it would be taken away and get me in trouble. The guy said .22 rifles dont have to be registered. Something tells me thats wrong. Thanks for the answers in advance i really appreciate it.

p.s. ive googled and cant seem to find a definitive answer.

You don't need to register it but you both need to go to the FFL and have the FFL do the transfer and you'll have to wait 10 days to pick it up. Both of you need to bring your IDs as well.

First are you both residents of CA?

Yes it has to go thru a Federal Firearm License (FFL) ie gunshop to do the transfer.
You both will fill out paperwork and you will pay fee's and then you wait 10 days to pick it up.
Rifles are not "registered" (this changes in 2014 when the new law starts)

But for it to be a legal transfer you both must go to a gun shop and do a Private Party Transfer (PPT )

There is no exemption for 22LR rifles for this..

The only few transfer without an FFL in CA you can do are limited inter-family transfers and rifles that are over 50 years old. The 597 is definatly not over 50 years...

Also, as the "buyer," you need to make sure you show up with the appropriate proof of residency. If you driver's license has your current physical address on it, you are good to go.

Yes. A current vehicle registration card with the same name as your driver's license and your current address works.

                As mentioned above:

-There is no rifle "registration" other than registered CA "assault weapons" and ".50BMGs"

-If both parties are CA residents, unless it is a qualified intrafamily transfer OR a rifle greater than 50 yrs old it is required to go through a CA FFL.

There are many people who decide that because of point 1 they can ignore point 2, this is breaking the law.
