I bought this gun back in the 90's. As manufactured it is of course an assault weapon under CA law (pistol with magazine outside the pistol grip). My original method to keep it legal was cutting off the protruding tip of the mag release. This was easy but required jimmying a screw driver up in there to release the magazine. So this weekend I got around to fabricating a real mag lock for it.
I figured there must be a few other TEC-22 owners in CA who need a better solution (or who woke up this morning and found out that toy pistol they bought for kicks years ago is an assault weapon).
I stole the design from some random AK mag lock which unfortunately wasn't wide enough to accommodate the wide trigger guard of the TEC.
I've never done any sheet metal work so this was totally amateur hour, but it came out ok.
My pattern on piece of rusty sheet metal I saved from something.

Cut and drilled. I realized later I should have cut the slot later because it made that area too flimsy to bend reliably.

Bent.

Just one teensy problem. You could get a finger up in there if you were sufficiently motivated.

Luckily I was able to fold over the ends to solve that problem.

Deburred and hit it with a few coats of alumahyde II epoxy paint to remove the steampunk look. This is the parkerize color paint, it looks darker and less striking in person. I should have just bought some black alumahyde but this is the kind of gun you paint with what you got
.
You can see the resemblance to the AK mag lock next to it.

And it's still tacky but I had to install it just to get some photos.

There isn't any interference with your trigger finger, the TEC-22 has an enormous trigger guard area.
