    Big 5 Experience

I went to the local Big 5 looking to purchase a 10/22 for my wife to use at an upcoming Appleseed weekend. I had in mind to possibly purchase 2 rifles on a single dros to save money and knowing that there will be future opportunities to take her out, my nephew, or some friends and show them how to use it. So as I was checking them out and I had mentioned the upcoming Appleseed event with the manager, I then asked if I would be able to get a discount on two. He then proceeded to tell me that since I mentioned it was for my wife then he cannot sell it to me unless my wife is there. At this point I can't even buy one, because he thinks I'm buying it for my wife. He tells me that it's California law that once he knows that the rifle I'm purchasing is not for me then he cannot sell it to me. It's my wife and it's not for her, but for her to use. So lesson is, you gotta watch what you say and be very specific and clear on intent.

I ran into a similar situation. It's called a "Straw Purchase". They're just making sure they cover their *ss*s.

I have heard of this happening at Big 5 on several occasions.

Anything you say or do can and will be held against you

You cant say your buying a firearm for someone else

Go to the next store and don't say anything.

This is BS. The feds say that if you're buying a gun as a gift, it is not a straw purchase, and California says that you can give your spouse, children, grandchildren, parents or grandparents a gun and not have to go through an FFL. Best thing you can do is take your business to someone that doesn't treat you like a felon when you aren't doing anything wrong. Now get out there and buy your wife a gun!

Go to another Big 5, and keep your mouth shut.

I'm pretty sure the whole straw buyer thing doesn't extend to spouses.

Depends who you talk to I guess. I was browsing one time and mentioned something to the same effect, and the guy "couldn't have sold it to me at that point even if I wanted it" because my fiance and I aren't married. Understandable; I wasn't buying that day anyways so no biggie. However, if we were in fact legally married, that would have been 100% A-OK with him.

Saw the same thing happen at another local shop. Only this customer was talking to much and acting like a little gangster. The employee had enough and gave back this guy his ID a shreded the paperwork infront of him. He told him he wasn't comfortable selling him a firearm. You should of seen the customers face. I had to walk outside because I couldn't stop laughing.

My understanding is that you dont have to cut paper if it's handed down a family line (granparent -> dad -> son -> grandson) but that you did if you went up or sideways ( giving firearm to grandparent/parent)

Grandparent to child/parent to child/grandchild or whichever direction up or down as long as it's between those three relationships. It goes vertically; not laterally.

Lol, the funniest i've ever seen is a mother that came in the store with the intent on buying guns for her 2 gangsta sons with one of them in a wheelchair with fresh hospital bandages on legs and body. Looks to me like they were looking for guns for a retaliation. And the employee that helped them knew this was a raw deal thus refusing any sales to them.

Last time I was in they made me redo all the paperwork because they didn't like the color of the ink in my pen... I just stared at them, but they were serious...!
