    HELP: M&P 15-22 scope/mount

    Hi,

Over the last three years, I've gotten a lot of great advice on center fire handguns. Hoping someone can help me in regards to buying a scope and mount set for my M&P 15-22.

My sister gave me her approval to take my soon-to-be (in a month) 12 years old nephew to go to the range. Want this to be a great first time at the range experience.

I've always wanted to put on a scope and mount on my M&P 15-22, but never really felt compelled enough until now.

It's hard to give you the exact requirement I'm looking for since I don't even know it myself. A lot of it is in the air depending on how much my nephew and son enjoys shooting.

I'd like a scope for an indoor range and "possible" for outdoor ranges with more distance.

Cost isn't an issue, but I'd like the best bang for the buck. A scope that will not limit the range of the 15-22. Durable, good clarity, etc. A big plus but not critical is a scope that can also be used on a daniel defense V1 m4.

I'd also like to mount it high enough so I don't have to take on/off the flip up/down iron sights.

Most importantly, I'd love to get information or weblinks so I can read up amd educate myself on "which mounts to buy/use for a scope to get clearance of the flipped down iron sights." How do you determine which mounts to buy and use for a particular scope?

Please provide links to the scope and mount you recommend. DUMB down the information so a noob like me can understand.

    Thanks guys.

Have you thought about maybe a red dot sight and magnifier combination?
That was it is still fun at close range but then you can swing a 5X magnifier infront of it.

I have an Armalite mount and a Leupold VX-II Rimfire EFR 3-9-33mm with custom M1 turrets on my M&P 15/22.

The Armalite mount seems pretty sturdy and I haven't had any problems with it.

As far as zoom goes, a variable 3 to 9x should be sufficient.

I understand that you want the scope mounted higher for your flip-ups but I'm wondering if it would be better to have a lower mount for your smaller 12 yr old nephew.

The recoil is so light on these that you can get away with using the less-than-$100 range scopes (Barska, NCStar, etc) without worrying about it losing zero.

You might also want to consider a red dot + magnifier combo. I think the kids would think that it's cool...

It all depends on what you want to use it for. I like a Weaver VR3 1-3x20 in a QD Burris P.E.P.R. mount on my M&P15-22. But I don't shoot it much past 25 yards. Get SWFA to price match the scope and save on shipping.

On the other hand a Weaver RV9 3-9x32 Rimfire with AO is a darn fine little scope and more practical for target shooting.

          You might also consider a Weaver V16 4-16x40 w/AO.

You don't want a scope, IMHO, you want a Red Dot and Primary arms has good ones... Trust me on this, for well under $100 you can set that rifle up so everyone has a ball! Once they figure out the Dot, and it's easy....they go to town....buy lotsa ammo...you will need it!

Imo a reddot would look better on the 1522. And kids these days playing cod n mw digs the reddot types. Just take ur pick from the assorted reddot type optics of the known brands. Personally if i had the xtra funds or no limit, i'd opt for an eotech. Imo steer away from the ncstar barska crap. Centerpoints are okay el cheapos but for a little more $ u can get pa or vortex etc

I put a BSA Sweet .22 3-9 x 40 rifle scope on mine and it works great up to 100 yards (I haven't used it pass this distance yet). It has some kind of.22-specific trajectory compensation, adjustable objective, and comes with different turrets for 36-gr., 38-gr. and 40-gr. bullets. My daughter has taken to shooting out the center of her targets at 50 yards with this scope. You can find them on sale on Amazon for 39.99. It's price varys all the way up to 129.99 elsewhere. You will need a riser, otherwise it will look a little low. On ebay one of the sellers sells it with rings for 49.00. This is my setup with links and prices:

                Sweet 22 scope - 39.99:

                Riser $12.99:

                Rings $9.04:

I'd like to thank everyone for giving me some food for thought.

Thanks Shollong for patiently answering my questions via PM.

I just bought the Weaver 3-9 X28 and with burris QD P.E.P.R mounts.

I also think you fellows who suggested getting a red dot make a very good point so I will be ordering a Primary Arms red dot when it comes back in stock. All the micro dots are out of stock as of now.

Feels good getting out of my comfort zone and buying some optics that I wanted but was to afraid to do.

thanks again. My son and nephew appreciate it
