Sorry I'm New...

Hi Guys,
I think I have most of the staples of a great gun collection except for the .22... The Ruger 10/22 will be my next I think, but I would love to know from you fine folks what set up I should invest in. By this I mean: buying a complete .22 w/ bull barrel, buying a stock new/old 10/22 and upgrading, buying a completely different make/model, or whatever other info you could give me...
I know this topic has probably been beaten to death for the veterans of this forum, but I would love some expertise in this area (or any other post you think would help). Thank you for reading this and I hope you have some time to give me some knowledge.

Welcome to Calguns. I own a 10/22 and love it. I changed the stock to a Hogue. Other than that, it is stock. I have a Volquartsen being made as we speak. 3 more months.

Think of what the main first use will be. If you hunt then a light and handy 10/22 would do fine right out of the box. If it is bench shooting for you then look at those rifles that fit that. That is the great design of the 10/22, it is a very adaptable platform. Start with any type rifle that suits your type of shooting at that time and if that changes you can change it in a few minutes, that is part of the fun of this rifle. Try that with a centerfire and it can get expensive quick but rimfire can be more affordable to change around.

It all depends on what you want it for. If you're looking for out of the box accuracy then a bolt action CZ452/453/455 is a great choice. The Lux models are optimized for open sights and the American and Varmint models are for use with scopes. Just don't skimp on the quality of the scope.

If you want a rabbit hunter then a standard Ruger 10/22 will do the job. If you want a semiautomatic target rifle and have the patience and money to do the job right then I'd skip the Ruger factory 10/22 target model and build your own out of a standard 10/22. Just keep in mind that you'll have to use target or match ammo ($6-15 for a box of 50) to get everything out of a 22lr that it's capable of delivering.

Tomorrow FedEx should be dropping off the Timney one piece drop-in trigger and I have a 20" ER Shaw barrel on order. There's a 5 month wait on the barrel. Next pay check I'll order a Revolution Extreme Stock. Has none of these parts have arrived yet, I hope to post my impressions has I get them. With a little luck I'll get out to The Gun Range this Wednesday and try out that trigger.

If it's a 22lr rifle you are after a Marlin Model 60 shoots better out of the box than a 10/22 IMO

Right on, this is all great stuff... Living in Sacramento so probably won't be used for any hunting just plinking cheaply. When I was younger I really didn't understand the point of all the love for .22 guns. A friend would pick one up and excitedly tell me about it and i would feign interest but I just didn't get it. However, after years of shooting I would absolutely love a reliable gun I can take out and shoot all day long for $20. Good input...
I saw an advertisement on the homepage of calguns that could convert your 10/22 into a thompson complete with dummy "drum" mag lol. I don't think I will be taking that path ha ha.

Nothing wrong with a 10-22 but if you are gonna be taking it apart and swapping parts.......I'd go with this Magnum research. All the goodies right out of the box.

With age comes wisdom right? Ha ha, I know how forums can be, and for levity I was just trying to get a reading of how things work here. From the responses on this thread people seem extremely friendly. It seems like a great place to gain some knowledge.

Good advice, I think going the stock 10/22 route and adding what I think would kick the most *** will be the path I take... While I appreciate the response from the dude who posted 1 or 2 before you (regarding the magnum research .22) on paper it looks awesome but I checked out a few youtube reviews and one in particular turned me off. I think Ruger is the way to go...

The folks in the rimfire section are more friendly in my opinion. There isn't the overwhelming "need' to be macho, to shoot the bigger and most expensive gun. If you jump over the CA handgun and centerfire section people can be kinda rude.

The rimfire people are just more chill. Folks like sholling, merc, chaos and izzy always provide good advice without the attitude
