    Why almost no .17HMR pistols?

The only thing I've seen is a Taurus revolver. Seems like it would be similar to a 5.7 or .22TCM but with cheaper and more available ammo.

    5.7: 93 grain, 2130 fps, $.44/round
    .22TCM: 40 grain, 1875 fps, $.42/round
    .17HMR: 20 grain, 2375 fps, $.24/round

I know NAA was having problems for the short time they tried to market them. It works great in a locked breach gun such as a bolt action. In practice, it doesnt seem well suited to semi autos or revolvers.

I have a Savage 503 which is a .17HMR bolt action pistol. It is a lot of fun to shoot and is very accurate. I still think an AR in .17HMR would be awesome to own!

Started with a really nice S&W 647 back when they first came out. Put it up for sale, apparently I didn't ask for enough money because it went quick.

Later I picked up a Heritage Arms single action in .17HMR to go with my 96/17. It was before Ruger came out with the Single 17. I replaced some of the cheesier parts with Ruger bits and pieces.

I had a replacement barrel for the Automag II, but I could never get it to run right. Traded for a bottle of Scotch and some ammo.

At anything past 15 yards you just can't see the damn holes.

No you don't or no you didn't.

COAL won't fit in the mag. Action won't take the pressure.

I think the reason there is no Ar conversion for 17hmr is ammo cost related. I mean after all, why would you want to shoot a 17 grain bullet that cost you like $12 per 50 when you can buy a .223, 55 grainer for $6-7 or so per 20 or we reload for $0.15 per round? The .17 HMR is a great round for its purpose, like varmints and little wind, but it is not the best defence round. I think that is why manufacturers have decided to make .22 Mag pistols.

recents tests have shown the .17HMR will penetrate lower level body armor at a near point blank range. i think it was discussed on a thread here a while ago...

                    223 costs 30 cents a round @ $6 per 20...17HMR costs 24 cents a round at $12 for 50 rounds

17HMR is, indeed, very limited in its scope of operation.

i have both 17HMR and 22 WMR in bolt guns...i 'prefer' the 22 WMR

The problem with .17hmr in semi autos is pressure related. I forget who, ruger maybe remington, developmed a repeating .17hmr rifle and they recalled them and even bought some back.

The pressure of the round in a semi auto was such that it would rupture the bottom of the case when an extractor yanked on it. Thats why I think you only see them in bolt/revolver style firearms.

Funny thing, I know a guy who is a freak about the 17HMR and when the S&W 647 came out he got one of the first ones made. He took it out to the range and couldn't hit a 12" square target at 25 yards. He started looking at it and found that the barrel had no rifleing. S&W had apparently forgot to cut the grooves. S&W fixed it under warranty but he was pretty pissed about having to wait another couple of months to get it back.

I have a ruger 10/22 mag converted to 17hmr and I love it, it shoots flawlessly, but finding a 10/22mag to convert gets expensive
