Pros and cons of the Ruger 10/22 wood stock and Tactical versions.

So I went into my local Big 5 today and noticed they had their rugers on sale. 250$ for the standard wood stock one and 275$ for the tactical version. Now my question is could I mount a scope on the standard 10/22 or is that only possible on the tactical. Also how do they compare performance wise? I'm going to work so I'll check the thread when I get back if anyone has any questions for me. Thanks!

$250 is pretty high for the wood stock one in my opinion. I see them on sale regularly for $210.
Pretty sure it comes with a rail base that you put on the receiver for the scope rings to attach to. Might be wrong, more of a Marlin guy...

The standard 10/22 also comes with a scope rail just like the tactical so it's no problem to put on a scope. Performance wise, they'll be just about identical, biggest difference being the tactical barrel is slightly shorter and has no open sights so if your optic breaks out in the field, you're out of luck.

The tactical also has a flash hider.

With out iron sights you can only go with optics on the rifle. I wouldn't worry about breaking the optic since I doubt you are going into battle with it. It's really about the lack of flexibility. With the standard 10/22 you can take off the optic if you want to practice with irons.

Not many people stay with a stock 10/22 for very long. Too many different upgrades (ie. barrels, stocks, trigger assys). The only think that stays the same is the receiver. If you go with the tactical you can probably buy someones wood stock off of ebay. Or, you can go crazy and buy whatever stock you want, AR or thumbhole or all kinds of stocks.

Just buy the cheapest you can find and build your own. Used could be a good choice is your going to go with a new barrel and stock anyways.

Interesting, my buddy who works at a gun store said that was a reasonable price especially since rugers are a bit scarce due to them being 6 months behind in their production. Well if I don't get it this weekend, no big loss. I'll see if I can find it for lower if that is the case.

Fresno County area. We have a lot of good private gun shops, but all the ones I frequent are sold out of 10/22 rugers at the moment.

Big 5 constantly has them on sale. Wait a week or 2 and keep an eye on the ads

I have a tactical, very handy little gun, it bothers me the lack of iron sights sometimes. But in reality I like just having a scope on it, I got mine for $255 on Big 5 four months ago

Just get yourself a black or silver version (the receivers are painted) with a wooden stock. You'll probably eventually replace much of the rifle anyway but in the mean time you'll have a much more ridged shooting platform. The synthetic stock (almost all synthetic stocks) flex way too much and hurt accuracy.

You can also get a 10%-15% coupon (10% on sale items, 15% on non-sale items) by joining their email club to reduce it even further.
