What is the "best" .22 rifle these days?

My dad has an uber old single shot .22 and I am considering purchasing him a modern mag fed .22 I would like to pimp it out, high quality, durable, scope it, lots of extra mags, etc...

Main usage would be for amusement at the indoor and outdoor range trips!

If you want to "pimp it out," get a 10/22.

The "best" for what purpose? Are you looking for a $5000 compition gun? If so, the answer will still vary depending on the type of competition you're doing. Biathilon rifles arent the best for BR. BR rifles aren't the best for silloutte, etc. If you just want a rofle to pimp out with aftermarket parts, a 10-22 is your best choice.

No doubt, just looking for name brand feedback and such,

looks like Ruger makes the 10/22, are there any particular versions of it that anyone would recommend more than the rest?

Since you want to pimp it out, I'd find an OLD, used, one as cheap as possible. You should be able to find a beater from the 60's to 80's for $100-$200 if you look hard enough. The new ones just aren't the same quality.

10/22 for aftermarket upgrades, heres the wifes

                  Mine for competition

And two more after these. I have lots of 22 rifles, LOTS. And the best to tinker with are the 10/22s...

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
                  The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                  Are full of passionate intensity.

Those are some awesome looking .22's!

What price range should I be expecting at local shops around San Diego?

                    For a 10/22 and a solid scope?

Again, find an old plinker and put the stock, barrel, FCG, rings and optics of your choice on it.

You could go with an AR .22.
                        Detachable mags
Same function as a standard AR (If going with CMMG)
Nearly any accessories for a standard AR will work on the CMMG
Decent accuracy. My stock M4 LE will shoot sub 1" at 50 yards with decent ammo.

Use the same lower with another caliber upper.

Still, for me...is the Ruger 10/22

                            Danz La Nuit,

I have a couple of 10/22s and both are modified from stock. Mine aren't as cool as those competition rigs posted earlier, but there's so much fun to be had with 10/22's. My son's 10/22 started life as a standard barrel stainless with polymer stock, and now wears a Tapco FDE stock with a 3-9x40 scope on it. It's a really fun gun and very lightweight. I've played with a number of different configurations on this rifle including using a LER scope, red dots, forward grips, etc. This one is my "fun-gun tacticool Barbie-for-men plinker."

My other 10/22 is one I recently got and did a retro mod on. I turned it into a faux- M1 Carbine using a Sarco stock and Tech Sights. This thing is really fun and the Tech sights are impressive.
