    Marlin Glenfield 60 stock question..

So I recently had the bug for an older tube fed Marlin. I picked one up from here thats a 79 Glenfield. Today I took it to the range for the first time and I was amazed at how accurate it was, I loved it.

My question is that the barrel gets extremely hot after about 100 rounds ( I was using a Spee-D-Loader). Are there any after market stocks for an older 60 that can address this issue? Or am I just going to have to live with it and shoot slower/take more breaks in-between?

    Thanks

I have used Boyds for stocks and they have a rimfire thumbhole that I like on mine very much. There will be some inletting for a model 60, though. Depends on your mechanical abilities. There are vents below the barrel to aid in cooling. I will say that this will not affect the heat generated in you barrel after that many rounds much. This is why people buy guns with bull barrels if they want to put that much lead downrange in a hurry. Personally I would vote for you to save the money on the stock and just buy another Glenfield/Marlin or Ruger 10/22 that you can swap to when the other gets hot. Always a need for more guns

That sounds unusual for that type of rifle. How hot is hot? Is the barrel too hot to touch? Is the rifle exposed to direct sunlight when shooting? What ammo are you using? What is your rate of fire, are you rapid firing the rifle repeatedly?

I doubt that a different stock will make that much difference.

The barrel will not give me third degree burns, but I certainly can't leave any part of my hand on it for more than a few seconds. I was indoors at night, so there was no sunlight. I was using Winchester white box ammo to shoot with. I was shooting a round probably every 2-4 seconds until empty. But like I said I had one of those spee D loaders, so I had maybe a 10-20 second break before firing off another 17. I'm just used to Rugers 10/22 so I've never felt it ever being hot when firing off a ton of rounds. I could very well be just a baby and need to slow down my rate of fire.

If the rifle holds its accuracy after becoming hot I don't think you have a problem. Appears your rate of fire is around 100 rounds/10 minutes. Doesn't sound extreme to me. Of course the barrel will heat up as you have seen but that's not abnormal for that rate of fire. If the barrel were too hot then the chamber would also tend to be hot and if too hot you would begin to experience problems with extraction and loading. My gut feeling is that you don't have a problem.

I have a .22Magnum bolt action rifle that exhibits the same (even hotter) issue after about 150 rounds at the range. The point of impact will drop 1" when it gets so hot you can't touch the barrel for more that 1/2 second but no other issues. I just keep shooting it.

oh Accuracy isn't a problem. I can still hit dimes at 50 ft easily. I was just looking to see if there was an aftermarket stock for the marlin with like a hand guard to prevent me or someone else from burning their hand. But I guess I could just man up and deal with it, or shoot slower and take more breaks in-between.

Shooting dimes? You're defeating the whole reason for shooting 22's! Now it's costing you 12 cents a round!

              Shoot pennies!

Just got an old one a few months ago, and I love it. Make sure you keep the trigger gaurd screws tight. Mine slamfired the first time i chambered a round. Tightened up those screws and I've never had an issue again with it. Marlin just makes great little 22s. Love my 795 as well.
