Loki makes one, and one or two others. I haven't heard any feedback though.

Last time I was in a gun shop, they had a magazine that did a review on the Alexander Arms one. I didn't know any other manufacture had one. The article gave it good reviews. Not exactly something cheap to shoot though. I'll stick with my 223 upper.

I wanted one for a while but I have heard some problems with the .17 cartridge in auto-loaders. I don't know how much if it is true but it was enough to keep me away until they are proven reliable and maybe more readily available.

              IIRC:

That was complete FUD by Remington. Remington had 597's blowing up in people's faces. So they blamed the .17 HMR cartridge saying it wasn't suited for semi-auto's. It was complete BS to deflect blame from an engineering screw-up of their making.

I think it had something to do with the speed of their bolt. The hot .17 was cycling too fast compared to the .22 LR, so they threw in a tungsten bolt to slow it down. Well, tungsten is brittle and started to blow apart. Rather than admitting they screwed up they blamed the cartridge.

So the FUD stuck. The proof of the pudding is Volquartsen, Excel Arms, and Alexander Arms have had 17 HMR semi-auto's for YEARS without an incident. I'm not familiar with Loki, so I don't know about them. Unfortunately due to the FUD, other gun makers are gun shy to try making a semi-auto in .17 HMR due to liability exposure.

The problem is Volquartsen and Alexander Arms charge a premium and Excel Arms is a fairly unkown entity (especially odd since they're here in California). So unless you hit the lottery or you have deep pockets, you won't be owning a .17 HMR semi-auto until you save up enough change.

I'm saving up for one of those overpriced AA uppers.

Interesting information and thanks for sharing. I had no idea where these rumors had started but you pretty much hit the nail on the head with what I had heard regarding "problems"
