There you go SeanO, thats a great solution. Or something of the single shot Rossi or NEF variety. You can go from .22lr up to .50 cal. as well.

      1. 22lr ammo costs start from .2 cents each.
      2. 17hmr costs more then .25 cents, .223 is cheaper.
      3. more variety of 22lr guns.

You shouldn't. .22 comes first. .17 HMR comes when you can afford it and appreciate the benefits from its use.

With the .22 you can shoot small bore lever cowboy matches. (Henry Golden Boy I have.) I never heard of any matches with the .17 HMR but, maybe there is somewhere.

I use Aguila hyper velocity (~1700 fps) 22lr rounds out of a bolt gun.

150 yards for small varmint hunting is no problem.

Cost is ~$360/5000 for the ammo - includes taxes and shipping - yes, you are supposed to pay sales tax if your out-of-state retailer does not collect it from you.

When 17HMR came out it was reasonable in price. Now it is not. I use mine on the quite rare occasions I can go somewhere and shoot ground squirrels. Making the choice today it would be 22 if deciding between the two. If you do not have either then it is a no brainer. If you have a bunch of .22s already then you need a 17HMR, 17HM2, and 22WMR to take up room in your safe. It is your duty as a calgunner.

So like someone said earlier, buy all three.

The .17hmr do get majorly affected by wind.
i love my savage 22 FV. it makes me look better than i am.

                      223 is cheaper??? Last I check 17HMR is $9.99/ 50 rounds. 223 can't be cheaper than that.
                      The stuff that goes boom.

I want with a 22 LR and a 22 hornet combo of two small caliber rifles. Already have a couple of 223, just in case I need more punch. seems to fit the bill overall.

Get the 22 first! for cheap practice the 22 is still king. If you were buying as a hunting gun Id say get the 17 first. But the 22 is quiet, fun, cheap, and accurate DR
