    plinking gun suggestions

I just DROSd a .270 win bolt rifle, which with my two handguns and my AR has me set for a while on centerfire guns. At the moment my only .22 is a Marlin 922 bolt rifle, which I absolutely love the accuracy on. I am looking at picking up a semi-auto .22 rifle and a .22 pistol to allow me to go out to the BLM a few miles from my home and enjoy plinking for a few hours with a $20 box of .22.

I'm pretty sure I will be going with a Marlin 60 or 795, I like my 922 so much, and if I went with the 795 it uses the same magazines as my 922 and it either can be had for considerably less than a 10/22. I'm not looking to do anything with the rifle other than either a set of tech sights or a decent scope, I don't really plan on dropping it into any tacticool stocks, and if I change my mind I know there are a few available for the Marlin that I like.

The problem I am having is deciding on a .22 pistol. I have looked at the P22, Mosquito and SR22, I want to get my hands on a M&P22 to see how that feels, although so far I have felt the P22 felt the best in my hands, the other two I am considering are a Ruger 22/45 and a S&W 22a, although I am not a huge fan of how 22 target pistols look, but form over function isn't really the point for me right now.

Any other guns I should be looking at or considering? Thanks.

Sounds like your halfway home. I like both the Model 60 and 10/22 and own both. They have features I truly appreciate and others I don't. Sooner or later you'll own both, the matters is though which one comes first?

Browning Buckmark is a quality semi-auto .22 handgun. I had a Ruger SR22 and it was quite nice and compact, although the longer barrel of the Mark III or the Browning would be more accurate at longer range. I happen to like the Ruger 10/22 the best for rifles because of all the possibilities in the future. I wouldn't buy the Mosquito or the P22 with the SR22 around. That is just my opinion, for what that is worth.

Used ? ... High Standard (only those made in Ct....shoot only SV ammo in them).

All steel, good balance, excellent trigger and accuracy, easy take down, several models $325-$700

Turners is having Ruger days. You would not be disappointed with a 22/45.

I have enjoyed shooting my MK II and MK III to no end. I also have a .22 revolver that's fun too. At 50 yards it's a real challenge to hit silhouettes with my PPK/S, but it's fun when I actually hit the target. What I wish I had was a semi-auto .22 that feels more like a home defense type semi-automatic. For me that may mean a Sig or Glock conversion. Either way you go it's cheap and fun entertainment compared to centerfire.

The 22a, mosquito, and P22 have too many issues. I've owned them all and got rid of them all. If you want something that works all the time stick with a Ruger sr22, or mk series, or 22/45, or a browning buckmark....

You really can't go wrong with that.

I saw that deal a few days ago, if it wasnt a 120 mile 1-way drive I would have to make on that. Almost worth it, but I really don't have the free time at the moment to drive 500 miles for a .22, I'd burn over $70 in gas alone. Whoever gets that rifle is getting a heck of a deal though.

To answer an earlier post, no I am not adverse to purchasing used, provided I thoroughly inspect the gun before I purchase it.

I have also looked into and will be purchasing a cmmg conversion for my AR-15 especially considering I have seen them as low as $150 with a magazine, I haven't looked into it too much, but maybe there is a .22 conversion for either my 1911 compact or my USP compact. that I could use instead of buying a dedicated pistol.
