Confused on ruger 22/45 Volquartsen mods

forgive me if this is already answered in the forum but I was thinking about doing the Volquartsen mod for my ruger MIII 22/45. I know your supposed to buy the a kit or something and a MII bushing? Can anybody who has done this let me know if thats correct? Also if you have links to a cheap site to buy them from that would be appreciated.

Also I was wondering about the Magazine disconnect mod, or whatever its called, so I can fire it without having a mag in it. Is that part of the Volquartsen kits or is that a seperate mod?

By the way I actually successfully dissassmbled/re-assembled the 22/45 about 20 times in a row without hiccups. Sorry but I had to tell somebody since I am just so proud I finally figure out this pain in the *** to strip/assemble but dream to shoot gun. Maybe I don't need the kit now

The reason you want a Mk2 bushing is to do the magazine disconnect mod.

Pretty much what happens is when you remove the part that causes the disconnect you need to take up the space that that part took up. A Mk2 bushing will do this for you.

You can remove the magazine disconnect by using a couple 5 cent washers or one of the many commercially available bushings. ("Sam Lam" being the most popular)

There is a Volquartsen accurizing kit (trigger hammer sear etc) that many people get the one for the MK2 and get a MK2 bushing to go along with it.

There is no Volquartsen "mod" that I know of other then that

Thanks for the info. I don't intend to compete. I have figured out the dis-assembly/assembly but I would still like it to be easier. To me the most important thing is to buy the Mk2 bushing. I couldn't find the sam lam at any stores but I found this one:
Brownells has been serving hunters, shooters, and first responders since 1939 and is one of the most trusted suppliers and manufacturers in the World.

Anybody see a problem with it?

The only other thing that would be nice is the slide/bolt lock mod. I think that was part of the VOLQUARTSEN kit but if I just want that part can I just buy that? I just don't know that I want to spend $100 on a $279 gun. Plus my RIA 1911 Tactical has 5 days left before it gets out of jail and I need the money for 45 rounds.

Do a search for Sam Lam bushing and you should find a lot of info on different rimfire forums. You can e-mail him at sg552.2 at gmail.com

I'm pretty sure you're confused on the extended bolt release in the Volq accurizing kit. That piece only pertains to the standard MKIII, not the 22/45. If you're thinking of the famous "slingshot mod", go on Rimfire Central. There's plenty of howto's and pics by people who have done it. I did the basic gravity slingshot mod on my 22/45 but it needs a torsion spring to perform 100%. My bolt stop/release lever just rubs the frame enough that gravity won't let the lever fall when I slingshot the bolt.

Does the sling shot mod improve reliability? Does it still allow the bolt to lock open after the last shot on an empty mag? What are the benefits? What is the different ways to do this mod? (i see the thread on the spring method, 6 pages and counting). I just trying to learn about all the...

take a look at post #9.

            For OP,
For the Sam's bushing, he doesnt have a website so email is the best way to reach him. He will tell you to send him $11 cash in an envelope and with a return address and email. Once he receive it, he'll email you and ship the bushing to you. From what I heard, it takes 10 days for mail from the US to reach him in Canada and probably the same amount of time for the part to reach you. So if you want one, start early.

And get this, your thumbs will love you. I had one for my MKII and it's great.

              free shipping.

might want to look into the VQ sear and trigger while you're at it!

Thanks, emailed Sam Lam and he responded within minutes. Sending him my money today.

I was refering to the gravity slide lock mod that people seem to be doing on youtube. I don't really need it but I thought if I had things apart I might do it. For what I want from my $279 mk3 22/45 the complete VQ kit seems overkill. Is there a cheaper method than buying the entire kit to accomplish this, whats the parts list/links. Or do you guys think I should just let it be?

One last thing came to mind, being that I have the NON-removable grips has anybody found any good slip-on grips for it? I have seen people grind down the plastic to use the standard 1911 but I know I would mess that up. Likely I would buy another mk3 22/45 before I attempted that.

Edit: Wrote this before I saw your last message

You are mega confused, how did you get so locked onto the Volquartsen kit does the mods? Did you watch the Nutnfancy video or something?

Slow down and take some time and read up on these things.
Look up the mods individually, they are separate things. (but can be done at the same time while the gun is apart)
None of them need the Volquartsen parts.

The gravity slingshot mod you are just removing the detent and spring

The magazine disconnect as I have said can be done with the MK3 bushing and some washers or with one of the MK2 bushings. The reason that the Sam Lam is the best is because it was designed with the MK3 in mind and will be a better fit than MK2 bushings.

Probably the only Volquartsen parts you may want is the sear and the trigger but they are not necessary.

I read that this would fit. Go to Rimfirecentral and click on their 22/45 section. Tons of info there.

There's a user by the name of Dominic over at RFC that makes grip panels that does not require dremeling your 22/45, just need to drill a couple holes for the screws. Comes in either plastic or rubberized for <$20.

Or you can buy a set of hogue 1911 rubber grips and hollow it out.

This seems to be the popular/inexpensive setup

OP, when I get home today I'll snap some pics of my 22/45 with Dominic's grips. They work well and ok but if you're really picky you won't like them.

As already mentioned, you don't need all the VQ parts. Most people replace the sear and that's it. On mine I only did the sam lam bushing(sam is the person, email in post above. $11 for bushing includes shipping) and the sear. The trigger improved ten fold with only these mods. I shot over 4k rounds with the stock pistol before deciding what I wanted to improve on it.
