Worn cleaning rod

I noticed some of the plastic coating coming off a cleaning rod. I thought it was a carbon fiber rod but obviously, it's steel (ss?) underneath. I was wondering if I should stop using this rod for concern it may damage the bore. What do you think?

Toss it and get another. They aren't prohibitively expensive. But yes, a lot of them are steel rods coated in plastic.

Roger that. I think what may have done the damage is the ejector in a M&P 15-22. It crowds access when cleaning from the breach.

Take it easy on the rod... I think you are trying too hard!

Use a .17 cal. rod, not coated. The plastic coating picks up schards of glass left over from firing.

Get an Otis cleaning system or boresnake or patchworm (I have all three) and toss the rod. .22s don't need that much cleaning in the bore anyway. Only clean the bore when accuracy falls off. More .22 barrels have be damaged by cleaning than shooting.
