    what 22lr ammo?

I have a 22/45 and a 10/22. Currently I am just shooting the wwb 555 22lr from wally world, its not accurate but I can burn through a box in a week and it doesnt hurt the pocket book, to bad.

But I am looking for something a little more accurate but still cheap enough to plink with for the 22/45. I was thinking of getting some eley sprot for $26/500 40 gr lead round nose or some aguila subsonic 40gr lrn for $28. Are either of those any good, or is their something else to try? I want to keep the price per round under $.06/rnd or $60/1000 if I can get "decent" quality plinking ammo.

    Thanks

Ammo that fits your budget in order of accuracy for me.

    1. Aguila Pistol Match (Nearly as good as Wolf Match Target)
    2. Eley Sport
    3. Federal AutoMatch
    4. CCI SV

Ammo that is above your budget

    1. Wolf Match Target ($5/50)
    2. Federal 711b ($3.50-4.00/50)

Best to give up on the bulk ammo if you expect to improve accuracy. Ammo like Remington, Winchester, Federal bulk are all High Velocity ammo and the accuracy won't be there due to speed and quality of the ammo. Standard Velocity and Sub-sonic ammo is always more accurate. Two areas where you always get what you pay for is ammo and optics. Cheap and quality don't go together for those products.

Just so you know, all .22 match ammo is round nose standard velocity.

      Follow Izzy's advice.

Also buy a brick of CCI Blazer and try it on the 22/45. It shoots fairly well out of my 22/45 up to 15 yards.

Thanks for the replies I have 3 different kinds of fed match (auto, gold medal, and target) along with , remington eley target rifle, cci sgb, cci stinger, and fiocchi. Somewhere is a buld of the cci blazer too. I guess I will just have to order some of everything of what izzy mentioned.

If all else fails, I will have plenty of ammo for zombie squirrels .

I want to keep shooting a hollow point, because I have noticed that the lrn dont kill squirrels as quickly.

Federal Automatch 325ct is plenty accurate. There are quality issues depending on the lot, where you may get a few duds a box, which is unacceptable for competition shooters.

I use CCI Standard Velocity (paper boxes). If you buy in bulk it's probably the best round out there for the money. targetsportsusa.com has it for $269 a case, free shipping. The paper boxes are annoying, but I transfer the rounds to other packaging in seconds.

Really, unless one is a master level shooter in bullseye or smallbore rifle, one won't realize the difference in precision of the expensive ammunition. In many cases, the difference in precision becomes vanishingly small.

Just buy a box of each type on every brand, see what fails to cycle correctly. Some ammo works in one gun but fails in another.

Hollow points are best for hunting for sure. Round nose for target work.

              1. Aguila Pistol Match (cheaperthandirt.com)
              2. Eley Sport (cheaperthandirt.com)
              3. Federal AutoMatch (walmart)
              4. CCI SV (turner's, when they have it)
              5. Wolf Match Target (championshooterssupply.com)
              6. Federal 711b (championshooterssupply.com)

Pretty accurate (for me) hollow points are American Eagle 38gr. Got mine from Dunn's Sporting Goods for $169/4000 shipped.

I tried to do some grouping with the different types of ammo I have on hand. The automatch seemed to do pretty good, so did the Remington Eley. Fiocchi was in there for just a decent plinking round.

I dont know if its my lack of ability, but I just hate the sights on this pistol. They are to damned high for me, and I think my front sight leans to the shooters left a little. They really could have done a better job on the front post sight. I tried the hi viz and couldnt get used to it. I was getting to much blur at the top of the post, it wasnt crisp enough for me. Hopefully my new cheapo tasco red dot will make things a little better. I guess a lot of concentration and practice.

I find that CCI Blazer works well in most of my pistols, and it's available in the 525 round bulk packs. That being said, each gun seems to perform differently with each ammo. I have brought several S&W 41's and Ruger MK II's to the range in the same night, and each gun shoots differently with each round. Buy a box of the Winchester, Federal, Remington and CCI Blazer bulk packs and see how they perform in your gun. If you are still looking for better performance, start looking at the more expensive ammo.

                      CCI Standard Velocity

I just bought 1,000 rounds of CCI SV for $45 plus shipping from Cheaper than Dirt. Even with shipping it came out under 6 cents/round.

The CCI SV is generally seen as the most accurate of the less expensive ammunition. I shoot it as my practice ammo for bullseye pistol competition.

Produces very uniform and tight groups. No problem cycling through my Buck Mark.

                      I highly recommend it.
