Has anyone disassembled the HK MP5 SD any further than the recommended cleaning tear-down? Specifically the hand guard?

Any how much torque is necessary to remove the compensator to facilitate cleaning...it seems like it's on the barrel pretty snug, and I don't want to score/gouge the compensator with the provided small wrench that may jump out of the the two holes once I start applying some torque.

I can't speak for the hand-guard specifically on the SD variant, as I picked up the A3 variant. As far as the A3 goes, the hand-guard never comes off for cleaning the weapon.. no need to remove it.
The "compensator" on the end of the barrel is pretty snug from the factory.. Here's a tip for you. Keep the pistol grip and stock installed before removing the compensator. Sit down in a computer chair and collapse the stock. Place the stock against the seat of the chair between your thighs, and squeeze the pistol grip with your thighs. You've now got both hands free to focus on applying torque and keeping the wrench seated firmly so it doesn't jump and scratch up the end of the comp.
When I re-install my compensator, I tighten it by hand only. I snug it, then give it about 1/4 extra twist, sometimes as much as an extra 1/2 twist. Thus far, this has served me well. (and I believe I got the suggestion from the HK user manual) I had mine in about 30 pieces today... I guess I should have snagged a couple photos for you guys.
One other tip I've just remembered - The first time I took the metal upper receiver out of its shell, I had to loosen the 3 bolts on the shell itself. Ever since, I've kept the bolts on the shell snugged, but I'm able to slide the upper receiver out of its shell once I take the comp off.Comment

As far as the compensator goes, it is snug but comes off easily after the initial turn. The tool is not needed. I take the compensator often to measure for an alternative compensator I am fabricating. There is a o-ring on the barrel where the compensator seats. This keeps the compensator snug. On the back side of the compensator, there are a couple of countersunk allen screws. I have not removed them yet but I'm thinking that this is the key to removing the hand-guard. Just looking to confirm before I proceed.
The reason I want to remove the hand-guard is to fabricate a drop-in rail system that replaces the hand-guard.Comment

New compensator first. Then rails. I'll post both for whoever cares to see.Comment
