I am looking at putting a 22 rifle in jail this weekend and I keep going back and forth between a 10/22 or the Mark 2. I am looking for a target rifle that will have the most accuracy out of the box. I know both are great guns but can't decide so I figured I would ask for some input from the people that know.

10/22 vs Savage Mark2 BVTS

You're going to have to put quite a bit of money and work into a 10/22 (I own 6 or 7) to get it to be really accurate but it can be done and made competitive in local matches. Out of the box the Rugers just aren't all that accurate. The Savage is a really nice rifle but for your stated needs I'd look for a CZ455 Varmint or a CZ453 varmint. They're selling them as fast as they can build them so it may be a bit of a challenge to find one but they're well worth waiting for. Just don't skimp on the scope if you're serious about target shooting.

Get the CZ, you will not be sorry. They are wonderful rifles, high quality build and will last a lifetime and outshoot an out of the box 10/22 or Savage or Marlin or any other rifle at their price point. There is really no other comparison for the $$$. Stock Bolt guns will outshoot stock semi-autos every time. You can modify a 10/22 to shoot with a CZ but then you could have bought 2 CZs for the same $$$.
I have a Savage MKII BTVS and while its a fine rifle, it does not compare to my CZ 452 Ultralux in build, quality and accuracy.
What ever you get use quality ammo or you will be disappointed.Comment

savage mark 2 heavy barrel FV. it will do the job at 1/2 the cost.my FV is a wonderful rifle to target shoot. it loves federal bulk 22lr. you can get a pretty rifle that costs more, but unless you spend big bucks on a PRO hand made match rifle the savage will get it done.Last edited by NOTABIKER; 06-05-2012, 12:26 PM.Comment

Savage Mark II over 10/22 any day
I personally have shot both the 10/22 and Mark II out of the box and the Savage is by far superior in accuracy without any modifications.
Couldn't tell you anything about the CZ like some others have said, but then again, you didn't ask about it either.
This is my Mark II BVT and out of the box I threw on a basic 3x9 scope and was able to get consistent 5 round shots inside a dime at 50 yards just using Big 5 Remington 22LR rounds. (Nothing special at $19 per 525 rounds)

It came stock with a heavy barrel, AccuTrigger, 5 round clip as well as sling and scope mounts.
If you are in the Northen California area, you are more than welcome to come out to Vacaville and shoot mine to get a feel.

It sounds like you want the Mk2 for what you're looking for. I put about $400 into my my 10/22 and its not as accurate as the Mk2BVT I spend $250 on. I use the pasters for repairing shoot'n see targets at 50 yds as targets for my savage.
But like others have said... If you want real accuracy, you should look at a CZComment

I had a chance to look at the CZ and it is a nice rifle but is the difference worth the 100 in in price. Getting the CZ would mean my scope budget of 300 would now be 200. I know the scope is important(I have leaned first hand with my first AR scope) but is the trade off worth a lesser scope?Comment

This is my wifes .22. We sighted it in yesterday at 25 yards and the results were predictable. Very accurate and she says" It's sweet!"I personally have shot both the 10/22 and Mark II out of the box and the Savage is by far superior in accuracy without any modifications.

Had a Savage and sold it. Not as good as advertised for me. I will probably try a CZ as a bolt action .22 when my kids grow up. For now I am enjoying an NC22 AR."When you get the (men) to the range, you just get the men. But when you bring the (women) to the range, you get the (whole family). I've had a Savage Mk2 BV for quite some time and the fact that I still have it says a lot for it's performance. I've built and sold 2 10/22s, granted they were both highly upgraded, but the fact is in stock form, the Savage would outshoot them both hands down. You'd have to put quite a bit into a 10/22 to get in on par with the stock Savage. But it also comes down to what you want the rifle to do too. If you like to go to the range and spit 250 rounds down range in 20 minutes, you probably don't want to get a bolt action. At the other end, if you want a semi auto rifle that will match a bolt action in long range:accuracy, prepare to spend 2x the cost of a stock Savage in parts alone, minimum. For what it's worth, I always found my 10/22s to be more fun at the range, but at the end of the day I had other guns that were more fun.. which is where the Savage's accuracy made it the front runner when it came time to cut back on the collection."Everybody is a genius. I had a Savage MkII BTVS and currently have a CZ 455 FS. From my experience, the Savage and CZ have equivalent accuracy (both sub-MOA with the right ammo), but the CZ's workmanship, fit, and quality seem a lot better.
My brother has a tricked out 10/22 that will hold its own against both my rifles, but a stock Savage will beat a stock 10/22. If you want hard results, check out the CMP t-class and o-class. 10/22's dominate the scopes, while CZ's dominate open sights.Comment
