Which to buy? 3 types of rifles.

    Hello all,

I looking at spending $500 for a .22 rifle. I am looking for reliability and accuracy. The use will be target and just in case scenario and possible hunting and pest control.

I have stripped lower, but it is not necessarily the final answer.

    1) Ruger 10/22 plus accessories to cost up to $500

    2) Colt, SW, Sig .22 cal rifles

    3) a dedicated .22 AR upper to add onto my complete lower.

I am looking at longevity, parts to replace, and most important are pros and cons. And your recommendations especially. Thanks.

with .22lr I don't see any issues with longevity with any modern firearm...Parts for the 10/22 are easy to replace and readily available.

Now, you list only semi-auto rifles, don't discount lever-action or bolt action .22LR rifles.

Of your choices I like the Ruger 10/22 but I prefer my tube fed bolt action...it holds more rounds and shoots ALL .22 ammo including short, long, LR, CB's, and will never have cycling issues.

How about a Marlin Model 60? Those are also pretty darn accurate, surprisingly so given that it's a $135 rifle. But it's hard to argue with the teeny-tiny groups that result from it.

I like my friends 522 and I own a 15/22 MOE. Either way you cant go wrong. I really love to shoot my 10/22. You should look at a Henry lever action or maybe a CZ 455.

I'd stay away from the "Colt" line or GSG stuff. I haven't had good experiences with either brand. But there are people that love both.

I haven't forgotten those rifles. Just looking at semi auto. I have thought about the cz American with the .22lr and .17 combo. Also looked at the Savage rifle with fluted barrel..very sweet, and also held the Henry lever action. All nice rifles under $500....or close to.

              If you don't have a 10/22 I almost consider it....mandatory....

So.....no recommendations of a dedicated .22 AR upper? Why?

Just pick up a CZ455 American and mount a good scope on it like a Weaver RV9 3-9x32 Rimfire or a V16 4-16x40. Unless you get a lemon you'll have one heck of an accurate rifle on your hands.

The CZ 455 American Bolt Action Rifle is considered to be one of the finest rimfire rifles in the world. This rifle is chambered in .22 Long Rifle and has a 20.5 barrel.

The CZ 455 is the next generation of the CZ bolt action rimfire. The 455 model will eventually consolidate all of the receivers currently used in the 452 line into one co

This is my old CZ453 Varmint.

If you don't want to spend that much then buy a cheap wooden stock 10/22 and add a Weaver RV7 or RV9 scope. Later you can upgrade the barrel to a match-grade factory contour (aka "sporter") barrel for $100-150.

I put a match-grade ER Shaw and a walnut stock on my dad's old 10/22.

10/22 if you want to customize it, tons of options! That's why I picked one up this weekend at the gun show, first foray into 22 caliber, since 226 and 45 acp are so expensive! You can make it AR still rifle or sniper rifle, quite versatile platform! I'm no expert just IMO

                      10-22

how about a 10-22 target model ?....you wont have to replace the stock down the road....mine shoots very well and i havent felt the urgency to replace the trigger (200 bucks...ouch)..cheap mags....many mounting options...you will probably shoot it 10x more than any other rifle you own...ammo wise anyway.....cheers

Because I just got around to seeing this thread...

Below is a pic of my Nordic Components NC22 upper ($499.99) on a Spikes Tactical Lower. Above it is my JP15 Upper. The NC22 is very reliable and accurate enough for me. I'm not really sure what your precision standards are but the NC22 shoots about 2" groups using irons at 50 yards with me behind the trigger. It could probably do better with a better shooter behind it and with a powered optic. The price I quoted is for a complete upper only. It does not include the cost of a complete lower and whatever optic/mount combination you might want to put on it.

I like them - my two, CMMG dedicated uppers, lifetime warranty, very reliable, likes Winchester M-22s, Remington GBs, CCI Velocitors, Minimags, strips down like an actual AR15, contact Calgunner: Shadow65 for purchasing, very knowledgeable and good pricing

                          Other 22s, I own - 10/22, Savage MKII F, Winchester Wildcat, and Henry H001

A4 Upper (actually just sold - to fund a new toy)

M4 type (installed new Eotech 517, now its a super plinker)

10/22s are great, I just bought one for my son. Not the most accurate though unless you buy the target model and then trick it out.

If you want an accurate .22, but a CZ. I have the CZ527 Varmint in .223, GREAT rifle. If I were buying myself a serious accurate .22 for your budget, there is nothing else I would consider, CZ makes accurate, inexpensive and beautiful rifles.

a savage mark 2 will out shoot a 10-22, maybe even the CZ. if you want accurate out of the box for 250 bucks the savage will deliver.
