Kidd Supergrade 10 22, first shot flyers....need assistance

Does it throw a flyer if the barrel is hot as well as cold? I would say its something mechanical if it is doing that.

I have one rifle (savage 12 VLP in .223) that sends the first cold bore shot 3" low and 1" right. Then every shot after is dead nuts and takes out the center of the "X". For mine, its ONLY the first shot of the DAY....It does not happen after that first shot. This is while hunting or target shooting.

If yours is happening hot and cold, and with every magazine, I would say it might be mechanical and not something with the ammo. Hard to say though. Try chambering a round by hand, close the bolt, and then insert the magazine. That may help to narrow down the problem.

Also, if it only does it while cold, try shooting extremely slow (1 shot for every 5 minutes or more). If all shots are grouped together, its a temperature thing. Is your rifle bedded/floated and does it have a pressure pad for the barrel?

This is just what I would do first, and if I couldnt figure it out, I would be asking over on RFC.com

Standard ammo is never going to give spectacular results in a fine rifle like that and it is a beauty. I'm going to have to ponder the flyer issue a bit but I have one question, are you using more than one magazine with the same results? Try this jack a 1st round from a full mag into the chamber the exact same way you always do and eject it carefully and check for any deforming of the tip, any bending of the cartridge etc. That round needs to be pristine.

Getting back to ammo try a as many brands of target and match grade ammo as you can afford and pick the one that makes the tightest group. You'll need to clean between each and give each enough fouling rounds (~20 or so) to build up its own coating in the barrel before checking accuracy. Once you find what it likes leave alone until accuracy drops off. FWIW Wolf is affordable seems to liked by most precision 22s but you may find something it likes better.

I havent had CCI standard shoot worth a damn in either of my .22's (Savage mk 2 and a 10/22 with target barrel.) I would try it with some higher grade ammo like Wolf MT/Sk Standard Plus, etc. As mentioned, pull a bore snake down the bore a few times and shoot at least 20 rounds everytime you chamge ammo. Try and figure out if it is an ammo issue (the first round getting deformed on loading) or a barrel heat issue. Try ripping off 5 rounds fast, then throw a new full mag in and shoot a group. Try shooting groups with only 5 rounds or just 1 round in the mag. Load a round, then extract it and inspect it for damage, perhaps your mag or feed ramp is causing damage.

oh man, I saw your target there at Chabot yesterday too bad I didn't walk down as I would have loved to check out your rifle... especially with that Kidd trigger. I was shooting pistols but the original plan was to take my 10/22 & CZ out, so I did have all my SK & Wolf ammo with me.

Great advice from Sholling. What Eley ammo were you using? If its the Remington Target made by Eley I have not had good results with that ammo. Not nearly as good as Wolf Match Target or SK Standard Plus. Yours is an unusual problem, I have a Savage that throws the first cold bore round but then settles down.

I am not familiar with the 10/22 but if possible I would load a single round by hand all the way into the chamber and gently close the bolt and see if you have the same results. If OK then I would load one round in a mag and shoot, then 2 then one more on up to a full magazine shooting each time.

First, you appear to be confusing "accuracy" with "presicion".



Secondly, it sure sounds like some sort of feed problem to me. Have you tried just loading 5 rounds per mag? How are you chambering your first round? Are you inserting the mag with the action open or closed? Have you tried it the other way?

My 10-22 does the same thing when putting in a fresh mag. I believe it's due to being hand chambered on the first round of the mag, because if I load a full mag and fire off 9 and reload and shoot 9 basically leaving a self loaded round in the chamber it's all good no more flyers. Unless I run it empty and have to start the cycle over again. It chambers the next round a little harder than if you just drop the bolt.

Things to check:

How is the flyer round being chambered?
1) Are you riding home the bolt? That is to say are you are you holding on to the bolt when it chambers the round as opposed to just letting it drop from the fully open position.
2) Is the bolt dropped on that initial round from the open position or is it
cycled into the chamber from the bolt-closed position?
3) Do you notice the same flyer pattern if your mags have only 2 rounds each? Only 3 rounds each?
