ruger takedown

i got a ruger 10/22 takedown
what do you guys think is the best way to go for optics
compact scope or red dot ?
any help would be appreciated thanks

I went with the Simmons 22Mag scope and it is spot on and didn't break the bank. Only issue I had was with the base mount that came with kept coming loose. No biggie though...

I got the DNZ Game Reaper Mount and the Nikon Prostaff 4x32 for $50 after rebate (search my started threads). I really like my setup and it fits in my bag.

It is a matter of personal preference.

If you can afford it, the Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm is a fast acquiring and compact scope, perfect for the TD. But then again, it's almost twice the cost of the gun itself. That is my "dream" choice. My "reality" choice would be the Nikon Prostaff that walletclan mentioned. It's larger, but still a great scope.

This would be the ideal choice due to weight/compact size (I almost went with it but wanted a tad bit more magnification). An RDS scope such as an AimPoint Micro T-1 would be a nice choice too but expect to shell out upward of $600+ depending on which mount you go with

I ended up going with this Leupold rimfire scope:

With these quick release type of rings:

I'm extremely happy with this setup; relatively light weight (11.4 oz total weight for this scope and the QRW rings). I can fit the buttstock end with the scope mounted in the large pocket of the Ruger bag but as others have noted, the flap (velco) will not secure so I just remove the scope from the base and put it into one of the extra pockets next to the barrel.

If you're interested in anything Leupold, give Scott Berish at Liberty Optics a ring (he's a forum vendor); he will provide you with the best possible price ($209 shipped for the Leupold rimfire scope listed above and $49 shipped for the Leupold QRW rings)

Another thing to mention; with the factory scope base installed (but without the scope mounted), I can still use the factory iron sights no problem. The base being installed on the receiver does make for a slightly cluttered sight picture but the sights are 100% usable (I believe Ruger purposely intended on users being able to use the irons with the base installed). That was my reason for going with quick release type of rings...

See-through type of rings are another option but will place the scope a tad high making a proper cheekweld difficult (but still manageable).

I have the same and it is perfect for my 10/22.

I put a $35.00 Tasco Red Dot and it works fine. It was my 8 year old nephew's first trip to the range. He was shooting good groups at 50 yards.
