Cmmg 22lr bolt conversion ??'s

How reliable are the drop in 22lr bolts in .223 uppers?

Very reliable. I suggest the stainless Evolution bolt.
Stronger steel, uses less lube, easier to clean, stays cleaner longer.
Understand, the cheap kits you see at CDNN and other places are the old, discontinued, first Gen stainless kits. They do not have the up grades of the Evolution.

And what makes yours unreliable? I and many others have 1000's of rounds down range with these.
If yours is not running, there is a reason and it can be corrected.

i have no experience with a 'kit' drop in type .22lr, but i do have experience with a dedicated .22lr AR.

i purchased the dedicated AR in .22lr and purchased the 5.56 uppers to go along with it.

i've cycled many hundreds of rounds thru the .22lr and found it to be very reliable and very accurate. at my last outing, i was pleasantly surprised to find myself hitting a one gallon milk jug at 150 yards, with astonishing regularity with the A2/A3, open sights. (my AR is on the M4 based platform)

i am NOT sorry i chose this way to go.

one issue i dealt with at the beginning was the initial cleaning. once i cleaned the bore and chamber... virtually any ammo will function. on occasion, there is a FTF, but that's, normally, from the ammo, NOT the firearms function.

i think you'll find, which ever say you go, the .22lr AR platform is great!

I need to get with you about milling some 80's... Maybe I can check them out right quick before i leave and get them running. Working with so many conversions/ .22lr uppers over the last two years has gotten me to the point I can get just about any of them running quickly.

My drop in was finicky till I polished the finish off of the rails. It was acting like sandpaper and gripping the bolt. Once I removed the finish from the rails and smoothed it up it runs great with no hiccups.

I have one of the first gen (black) kits and it jams or FTE's every 3 to 4 rounds, tried a friends stainless and it works perfectly. Called CMMG and they are letting me upgrade for a nominal fee.

So get it, if it doesn't work CMMG will make it right.

I would love to get them running great... Both run not very well in 7 different ar's I have tried to run them in.. I have ground and polished them a bunch and they do work "better" but still not the way I would want them to work. The older one likes to double tap often so I am leary of running that one at all... It has about 3K through and the other about 600 maybe... So I am good at fixing but any help is always a happy thing since I am buisy helping others on 80's

I've not dealt with the old kits but I can tell you taking them apart, especially the black ones, can easily tweak and bend the rails. That will leed to all sorts of problems.
The new Evolution kits are nothing like the old ones.
That is why I warn against buying the old, discontinued kits you find for $160 at different retailers.
People that don't know see a CMMG stainless kit cheap and assume it's the Evolution. It is not.

I called CMMG and they were not super helpful... I have made some kits work bettre but not sure on the double tap.... Would be cool if it worked as needed.

There is really nothing in the kit itself to create a double tap.

I had the older SS model, I fired a few hundred rounds with it through a BCM and Bushmaster upper. I had zero problems firing Federal 525, all I did was clean it when it first arrived. They're not super accurate through either a 1/9 or 1/7 twist barrel, but I still had lots of fun.

A friend of mine bought the same kit around the same time I did, we took them out the same time and fired about the same number of rounds that first day. He also had zero problems, I think he was using the same ammo, but I'm not sure its been a while. I eventually sold it when I got a dedicated 22 AR, but I still would recommended it to those on a budget.

Don't try to run Remington or some junk ammo in them. These were designed around Fed and Winchester copper wash 36 gr. bulk pack.
CCI Mini Mags run great.
