    New 22/45... any advice?

Just put a 22/45 in jail today so I have 10 days to pick up extra mags and plenty of ammo, but being new to the Ruger MK series, any upgrades or accessories that the more seasoned shooters can recommend?

I took a quick picture with my cell phone

Thanks in advance for any advise and wise words of wisdom.

just an FYI also...there are 2 versions of the 22/45 magazine..one for the new 22/45 with the mag safety disconnect and one for the earlier generations. If you get rid of the mag disconnect...I believe you can use both versions

I put a Hi-Viz front sight on mine, as well as some aftermarket grips. I also plan to put a Bushnell TRS-25 as soon as I can get one.

Watch the youtube vids of reassembly and prepared to get frustrated. I've had mine for like 15 years and occationally its still a pain to get together correctly!

                Buy a bunch of mags.

Don't keep it in the plastic case. It will wear the bluing off the gun.

Following the instructions to a T for takedown/reassembly.

Congrats great pistol. You have the earlier receiver version like me ... non-removal grips ... .. there are mods for that

There is the bolt release spring mod

The get rid of the lame mag disconnect mod. I put a Volquartesn MK II
trigger kit in mine that has the MKII bushing to replace the mag disconnect.

I have both types of mags and they both work in a stock pistol no prob. the earlier versions will release/slide out much better too.

A .22 pistol boresnake is great for general quick cleaning without breaking it down.

But eventually you have to open that door and do a full breakdown. Fun stuff

I just put in jail on Friday as well, the exact same as yours. I wish I would have looked into more and gotten one with replaceable grips. I've been looking it up and it seems as though you can still mod the grip to accept 1911 grips as well as other grips. I haven't looked into it tons though.

I got to dry fire it once with a snap cap after the safe handgun demonstration. I really liked the trigger the way it was, but a volquartsen trigger kit would make it much more awesome.

New sights are dependent on the shooter imo. I really don't care about mine being all black, it doesn't change how I line them up. If I feel a new front site would make it easier, I'll probably just paint it or put a piece of tape over it or something.

I'm not sure exactly what it's called, but it's the end of the bolt that you grip to rack the gun. They changed it from the MK ii and MK iiis. The MK iiis are sloped at an angle where the MK iis are flat. If it bothers you that it is sloped, I've heard of people changing it out with a MK ii one.

If you're doing competition, the trigger kit and the grip mod are probably best and then going from there once you know more of what you want.

Just remember, I'm not a competition shooter or anything. These are just things I've read about over these past 3 or 4 days.

I was not aware the 'replaceable grips' version of the 22/45 mkIII was on the DOJ list. Anyone actually purchase one here yet??

I don't believe it is on the list. Ruger shows it as not approved for California on their website.

Thanks for all the responses and helpful advice, getting rid of the mag disconnect and new sights sounds pretty good.

Any good sources for cheap mags or is $18.99 as good as its gonna get?

I saw one for sale at Ammo Brothers last year before black Friday. I was planning to buy it but another Calgunner beat me to it!
