    Lead Free

Was looking at buying my first rimfire gun for shooting rodents at close range.
Is lead free always this hard to find? Is it because of squirrel season? Only thing I found in stock locally is CCI green 22 mag.

I'm thinking a PCP pellet gun might be better choice for what i need.

All 22 lead free ammo sucks balls. Horrible accuracy and precision.

If you need rimfire, choose a .17 HMR. Lead free in .17 HMR performs well.

Your best bet is a pellet gun since you say it's close range. Choose a .22 pellet gun over a .177.

K1 is right about lead free .22 LR sucking and about .17 HMR being good. I have, though, had success with .22 WMR in lead free. Did very well with ground squirrels this year with the magnum lead free and this was out of an auto. Avoid lead free .22 LR

        Absa-motherfu€1n-lootly!!! <<< good advice.

If you want to get serious and a crazy about legally blasting ground squirrels in CA, you need 3 guns on hand, for three different reasons:

#1- 17hmr using non-lead for long range accuracy.

#2- A decent pellet gun for short range use (especially where gun noise needs to be low- think about your surroundings) using lead ammo (not subject to the lead ban for hunting, because a pellet gun it does not fall under the definition of a firearm here in California). I can go into more detailed info in a private message if you need more details on this.

#3- A shotgun (my personally favorite!) using a non- lead ammo—> max of #6 sized shot (I prefer size #7 for a better patter out to about a max of 35 yards), using a modified choke (#6 sized shot) or improved modified choke if using #7 sized steel choke.

hope this helps. Again, feel free to PM me if you want more detailed info.
