    New (to me) Remington 40X

Over the weekend I won a Remington 40X in 22lr at an estate auction. It was a bit of a risk because there were only two pictures and a pretty sparse description

That looks sweet! I always keep my eye out for that model. I never see one that nice. What glass is that?

Thanks, gigante. Description advises a BSA Platinum 8-32x44. If it is an older BSA Platinum, it could have been made in Japan. That would be good. If it is newer, it was probably made in China, which means it probably isn't worth much.

Well it looks good on it. Post some groups when you get some please.

Very nice! Later 700 style 40x, as opposed to the earlier pattern 722 types. Is that a bull, or standard weight barrel? Hard to tell in the picture. Std bbl is very similar in profile to Remington varmint barrels, while bulls are like Kenworth axles. I have a standard and it LOVES Center X. Put a Jap Weaver T36 on it and it gives Holeshot 2500's and similar "benchrest" actions a good run for the money.
          Enjoy!

For many years I was looking for either a a 40x or a Winchester Model 52, but never saw either for sale. Then I stumbled onto a deal for three Winchester Model 52's and don't need a 40x. However, if I see a older model 40x for a decent price, I'm afraid I won't be able to help myself and it'll come home with me.

                Thanks, Ken.

Not sure which barrel it has. From the angle of the pictures it is hard to tell and I'm still waiting for it to arrive at my FFL's shop. I'm hoping it is a standard weight, only because I already have a bull barrel 40X. I've got a Weaver T36 and a Sightron SII 36X. Not sure which to mount.

I've got a B&L 36X on my bull barrel 40X and that combination shoots well

I've got an addiction to Winchester 52's and Remington 40x's. They both are great shooters, I like surplus US weapons, and this purports to be US marked, so it really called to me.

Mount the one that does exactly what you tell it to do when you twist the knobs. I had a late weaver t36 side focus on mine, but it just could not track reliably. Sent it to Weaver and came back no better. Hornswoggled the old knackered t36 back from the guy I traded it to, and now all is right in the universe!
I can live with ring marks and very SLIGHTLY less clear glass a lot more than a scope with a mind of its own.

Thanks, Ken. Good advice for sure.

I shoot in 100 yard .22 matches, so, to me, repeatable corrections are more important than the absolute best glass. At 100 yards during the day, I don't think the glass is a limiting factor.

Got a look at the new Model 40-X before it went into the FFL's safe for the 10 day "cooling off" period. Bull barrel. Stock and metal both in very nice condition. Came with a handstop.

I picked up the 40-X after the 10 day "cooling off" period. I got a chance to look it over and it really looks good. Stock and metal are fine.

I had a chance to make a quick stop at the range. I was able to zero the rifle and shot a 5 shot group before I had to leave. Five rounds at 50 yards with Eley black box match--.445"

I'm wondering how much the cheap Chinese BSA scope is affecting the precision. Surprisingly, even after being shipped across the country, the scope was nearly zeroed at 25 yards (maybe 1/4 minute to left off, with elevation right on). I also didn't have a chance to clean the bore, which might have been a good thing

Wow that's a drool-worthy rifle! I'm curious how ammo-sensitive it is. (I'm sure you don't know yet having just gotten your mitts on it)
How much did you have to pay for it? I'd love a nice 22 rifle so I'll keep my eyes out for one of these.
