    Remington 581

I won this nice looking Remington 581 (or 581S) at an auction recently. It has a 4 digit s/n, so I assume that it is an early model.

Anyone have any experience with these rifles?

I have a 581-L, a left handed version of the rifle. I put an old Bushnell 4x scope on it.With the 24" barrel it's very quiet with subsonic hollow points and CB ammo. Fun to shoot in the backyard.

Looks brand new. I have not had good results with the Remington plastic 10 round mags. 5 round mags are much more reliable.

        Thanks for the tips, guys.

Do these come with a dovetail for scope mounting, or are they D&T'd?

This was the first gun I bought about 52 years ago. Under $100 new at the time. Added a free 4X32 scope with dovetail rings and shot thousands of rounds back then. A few years later I hacked off the barrel to 16" and grafted a Crosman pellet gun stock and shot thousands of rounds more. It came with a 5 round magazine that I can load with 6 rounds.

It sat at my parents house for 40+ years and I got it back when I got back into shooting. The gun is just as it was back then, same scope, still shoots. It groups tighter than most of the 30 or more recent 22s I owned. The only accuracy equals of my guns are the CZ457 Varmint, Ruger Custom Shop 10/22 Competition, T/C TCR22 Performance Center, Browning SA-22 Challenge.

It shoots far better than CZ455 American, Ruger American Rimfire Target (bull barrel), multiple versions of 10/22s including 10/22 Takedown Lite and Takedown Bull Barrel, Browning Buckmark Target (bull barrel) and many others.

It was my first gun and I'm glad I still have it.

Wow, pinger, that turned out nice!

What is the serial number range on that?

Very nice!! I used this to help me identify the manufacture date of my Remington 552

My very first firearm was a Rem 580. That's the single shot version. Unfortunately I do not have it anymore. I currently own the 581 and the 582 (tube-fed). Shoot them both regularly along with many other older 22s. Great shooters. I'll find another 580 one day. Yours looks great.

My new 581 has a four digit serial number, so I'm guessing it is really old (for a 581).
