ranger 101.16 rifle

I have an opportunity to pick up a ranger 101.16 .22 rifle and wondered if anyone has any info on them.

Google searches indicate the are decent shooters but not collectable, which works for me.

anyone with hands on experience with this rifle?

I went ahead and purchased this rifle. Apparently it was made by Savage/Stevens for Sears and by features (or lack of) it is earlier than 1958 might even be in the 40's. Googled up a bunch of info but nothing that pinpoints exact year of mfg.

Taking it out to shoot on Saturday.

mine's a shooter for sure. I did buy a vintage weaver b6 scope from LK Scope repair with a vintage side mount.

I found out mine was made between 1939-1942. http://www.rimfirecentral.com has some info about these 22's

Mine is the same vintage as yours. I have owned mine for nearly 30 years.

Nothing like having a 70 years old rifle that out shoots any of the new .22's that show at the range.

When someone asks me what .22 they should get I tell the "Get an Steven's model 87".

You can spend $250 on a Ruger 10/22, the spend another a couple of hundred on a scope and a target barrel, and my $30 prewar Ranger with iron sights will still out shoot it at 100 yards all day long.

yeah the Sears Rangers were made by Springfield/Stevens/Savage.

I bought mine used earlier this year for 100 out the door, and outside of a good cleaning it was in great shape.

these rifles are very quiet, my ruger 22/45 pistol is much louder. barrel length probably has a lot to do with it.

My friend gave me one of these rifles a few years ago. I must admit, I only cleaned it up, but did not shoot it much. It is a very accurate rifle and I had no issues over a few hundred rounds I shot through it. The finish on mine is a bit rough, so I plan to restore it to its previous glory in a few months.

thats what is nice about them, they're not really collector guns so you can refinish, reblue until you get it like you want.

I went shooting a couple of months ago out in the forest area here in OR. with my son and a couple of his friends. We had AR's, shotguns, pistols and the .22 rifle. Everyone wanted to shoot the .22

This is a tacti-cool .22 rifle circa 1950's, in essence Savage 87A made to look like Garand, sold under Springfield Model 87M name.

So sorry to dig up a necro-post, but does anyone have any info on when these Ranger 101.16 rifles were made? How can you tell what year a particular rifle was made when there are no SNs on a rifle?
