    1911-22 recommendations?

I love shooting my 1911, but ammo is expensive and i think my accuracy is suffering because i am anticipating the kick.

thinking of getting a 1911 copy that shoots .22
a cheap one if possible - darn schoolteacher salary and all that.
would love to hear your thoughts.

Take a shooting class, or someone who knows what they are going, they will tell you what you are doing wrong and how to correct it

I have a GSG 1911 and I love it. You get the same straight pull as your .45 1911 and you take it apart the same way. Sights and grips are also compatible with the .45 1911. In SoCal you can find a new phone for about $349 when on sale. I am not sure about other parts of Cali.

To me nothing beats shooting more. Practice makes perfect. I can take a class and get instructions but I still need to practice.

Yeah, GSG for the cost is hard to beat.

          Thanks, I'll check it out

I agree. I have taken classes and am a pretty good shot.

I used to have a Kimber 1911 that converted to a .22 and really miss it.
I feel it helped my shooting a lot.

Darn, it looks like I can't buy it here

Just buy another conversion kit and use it on your current 1911. I personally prefer the unit one by Bob Marvel. They're a little pricier but they're very well made and excellent/accurate shooters. If you're trying to keep cost down get one of the Advantage Arms, Kimber, or Ceiner models.

I got my GSG in vallejo for $379, if i recall. It's been great, as long as i feed it the good ammo. She doesn't like winchester bulk xpert hv (the grey brick with the lead-nose bullets.) She loves winchester superX, American Eagle and CCI

Awesome pistol for the price, and great for getting your grip, trigger squeeze, alignment practiced.

One complaint i have is that at 25yds the medium sight is about 6" high and the tall sight is 6"low. And since it's a three dot plastic sight, it throws me off a bit swapping between the kimber and the gsg.

the trigger pull on the gsg is heavier than my kimber, so when i switch back to .45, i have to pay extra attention to my trigger squeeze.

If the only reason you're considering it is because of ammo cost, you could also consider reloading. It's not as much of a price difference as 22, but you'll get the same recoil/followthrough/muzzlerise.

If you're considering it to be a fun plinker with certain training elements, it's amazing.

I would advise against the conversion kit. For the price of a good kit, you can practically get a dedicated 22 pistol.

edit: some reviews have stated that the guide rod is a cheap "pot metal" zinc alloy prone to breakage. I purchased an aftermarket one and threw that in. I removed the stock rod and the magazine disconnect and keep them in a baggie along with the two sights i don't use. Some reviews have said the barrel bushing will warp or twist. I have not had this problem, and was told that the bushings are now steel instead of whatever was bending.

I love my GSG. My “longterm” update will get updated again once I get back to West Coast but that link shows you what i’ve gone through with my GSG.

I love that .22 and shoot it more than anything else whenever I take it to the range.

If i'm not mistaken, the CA legal model was a later production, so they should all be later models if they're not threaded barrels.

But, if i am mistaken, the easiest way to check is to bring a small magnet and see if it sticks to the barrel bushing. The guide rods are reinforced at the base now, but i'd still order an aftermarket rod. I've heard of guys keeping the original rod and when it snapped the recoil spring plug flies out and gets lost.

Someone posted the a link earlier for guide rods. I was unable to get that company to work, so as an alternative i ordered from ZR Tactical Solutions. They also make barrel bushing compensators.

It's not cheap but I bought the Kimber Target 22 it's identical to the Target 9mm I just got except prob 12 oz in weight.

I recently picked up an Advantage Arms kit for a 1911 Commander, I put it on an old Fed Ord aluminum frame that I've had for many years. It functions great with Remington and Federal WalMart bulk ammo.I was able to hit clay birds 7 out 10 times at 25 yards.
