    .22lr Henry Survival Rifle Customization

    Hi everyone,

I am a new user on this forum, and I am in the process of deciding on my first firearm purchase. I really like AR-style rifles but do not want to deal with the paperwork and restrictions required to own them. That said, I decided on the .22 LR Henry Survival rifle because of its compact receiver design. The current stock design is a bit bulky and awkward, so I decided to research customization options.

After reading a thread on this site about someone building their own AR-7, I realized that I am not qualified to build my own AR-7. However, in my research, I came across a YouTube video and website that would allow me to assemble the rifle to meet my requirements: a lightweight AR-style .22 LR that breaks apart for compact packing. Price is not an issue for me, and I found an AR adapter from Haga Defense that is perfect for mounting an AR-15 grip and SIG-style stocks on your Henry U.S. Survival AR-7.
link found in my research via youtube video:

Now to my question: Since the Henry Survival rifle is .22 LR, is it legal to modify it, or is it subject to the same centerfire laws?

Thank you. I went to Bass Pro Shop, and they confirmed your recommendation. I will purchase an AR .22 LR pistol, and as a fun project, I'll modify the Henry Survival Rifle as my .22 LR rifle.

Things to keep in mind for rimfire rifles...

      1. Must have a minimum barrel length of 16".

      2. Must have a minimum overall length of 26".
Overall length is measured with the rifle in the shortest possible fireable configuration (stock folded/collapsed or removed if quick detachable).

If the minimum length requirements are not met, then the rifle will be considered an illegal SBR.

Based on the minimum length of 26 inches for this rifle, you can shoot it without the bulky stock.

That aftermarket set up for the Henry rifle looks cool, but bear in mind that those rifles are not meant to be shot a bunch, meaning the barrels generally lose a ton of accuracy after about 1000 rounds. The Henry survival rifles are meant as a survivalist tool, not as a heavy shooter.

If you really want an AR style 22 caliber rifle that you can reliably put tens of thousands of rounds through, look into building a Ruger 10/22 AR style gun because it will maintain accuracy for a much longer period of time. Also, tons of aftermarket parts/magazines to choose from.

            just my two cents.

            Enjoy putting together your gun.

lasts only a few seconds until they see how it shoots.

If you do decide to buy one of these, make sure you use high-velocity, decent ammo, like 40 grain round nose CCI mini-mags or CCI-AR ammo. It has serious issues cycling with budget stuff.

              have fun

If you like AR style firearms and money is not a concern, why not get a S&W MP15-22? Since it's a rimfire it is not subject to any AW laws so you can customize it with any accessories you'd like such as a pistol grip, collapsible stock, etc. It has a functioning bolt release just like an AR so it's a pretty good trainer rifle to get yourself use to the AR platform. Plus, it is extremely fun!! I have over 1000 rounds through mine now and it runs super smooth! Not saying the Henry is not a bad rifle, I actually want one in the future. But the S&W MP15-22 is perfect if you like AR style.
