Lots of problems with the mosquito's....

Not to mention the worst trigger I have ever felt!

My buddy is thinking of selling his and getting a Buckmark or Mk

I grew up with a MkII and loved it. I was going to buy a MKIII some years back and ended up trying out (and loving) the Buckmark.

I think they're both great guns. The buckmark is a lot easier to take down, but also ends up with a few more loose screws here and there with a lot of use. (I generally have blue loctite, allen wrenchs and a screwdriver in my range bag)

Accuracy wise, I think they're pretty even.

Been doing some research and ruger mkIII or browning buckmark is way to go. Probably stick eith ruger since there are tons of aftermarket parts and i dont like the fact that buckmark uses screws to take down. I could see it stripping or breaking over time.

So what you are saying is that i wont be able to change the barrel of the mkIII since both frame and barrel is registered as one?

Also which is better mkIII or 22/45? Is the only difference the polymer frame?

Here are my top picks:

Ruger MKII - One of the best target/plinking guns .22s out there

S&W 617 - Super fun and accurate with 10rnds and speedloaders

S&W 63 - Lightweight 6 shot kit gun, fun but a pain to reload every 6 shots

Beretta - Mod71/73 Jaguar - Best compact .22 IMPO Super accurate even with the shorter barrel

S&W 41 - Had one NIB but got rid of it. One of the best strictly target .22s. Too heavy for plinking, don't like to mess up the nice blued finish, ammo picky.

Walther TPH - Had one NIB sold it also. Fun, small .22, too small for my paws and will give you slide bite.

Phoenix Arms HP22 - Sold this one also. Inexpensive, fun plinker, too many safeties, problems with slide or was that frame cracking.

Kids love to shoot the MKII and SW617, may get one of the new Ruger SP101s in a 3" O yeah!

The upper half (the barrel and receiver) on the Ruger is the registered part.

You can replace the lower part which is called the "frame" but I don't think there are much options out there.

Volquartsen makes one but they are super expensive like 400 bucks if I remember right

I really see no reason to get the Volquartsen frame.. costs more then a Ruger MK its self...


MK and 22/45 is practically the same gun.

The grip angle and material of the frame is the main difference.
If you go with a 22/45 I would get one of the newer ones that you can change the grip panels on it if you want. Older ones the grips are molded in and not replaceable without heavy modification.

After alot of research in the last few days,I am going to buy the Ruger SR22,going to wait till they are around for a bit to get a better price or maybe even find a lightly used one eventually.From all I have reseached they seem to be a nice little pistol.I have read you may have to tighten the barrel set screw and maybe loctite it but thats really the only downside I have heard,to me thats a minor problem.Sounds like they will shoot about any ammo brand out there and function great.Also appear to be very easy to take down.

Im looking at mkIII target in stainless. Is that a good choice or should move up to hunter?

I just picked up a Buckmark URX Standard - great .22.

I looked at the Ruger Mark III and the 22/45, Buckmark, and Sig Mosquito. I think it will depend on how it feels in your hand. For me I liked the grip, the weight, and the overall comfort of handling it.

I like the feel of heavy guns and do best with them.
