I just got a savage 93r17 BVSS. Gonna get a DNZ mount for the scope. What are your thoughts on a 4-12x40 AO or a 6-18x44AO. Both are vortex scopes. Gonna shoot target and varmints.

Hi,
I personally run a 6-24x50 ao md ir scope on my 93fvss. I shoot ground squirrels all day long easily at 120-130 yards.Rifles:

Like "Ogre8472" I prefer higher magnification on my .17HMR. It gets boring shooting it at 50 yds so I usually shoot 100-200yds and use a Vortex Crossfire 8-32x50MM AO. The downside is that its a heavy scope so wouldn't want to carry it and the rifle around. There are better scopes out there but it works great for what I use it for. If you can afford it I would recommend a Nikon 6-18x or a Weaver Classic V 6-24x. Both have excellent glass.
The Vortex that I have is great up to 24X but begins to darken some after that. Pretty typical for a high magnification scope. At 100yds I don't like less than 20x on any scope if I want to shoot em in the eye.
For the OP, if you are set on one of the two you mentioned I would suggest the 6-18x44AO. Is that the new Crossfire II Model? In any case whatever you decide on give us an honest review of the scope.Last edited by Izzy43; 04-23-2012, 1:57 PM.Comment

I don't think you will see the same thing on a 6-18X scope that you will see on a 8-32X. It has to do with the exit pupil size which begins to get pretty small above 20X. I have a couple of 6.5-20X scopes that do not darken at all at their highest setting. A decent 6-18X scope should not darken at 18X, a cheap one might.
As far as effecting accuracy it does a little from the fact that the target appears darker and less clear due to the loss of light transmission thru the scope at the higher magnification settings. This is pretty typical of most high magnification scopes, even some of the high end brands.Comment

You might also want to look at a Weaver V24 6-24x42. It has excellent glass without being obscenely heavy.
