I got my 10/22 out of jail yesterday. I may run a boresnake through it and squirt a little lube in before I shoot it, but I certainly won't be taking it apart for awhile unless something goes wrong. This isn't my first gun so I don't have the excitement you do, I just picked this up as a cheap plinker and something to break in new shooters on. If I see tons of paint flacks I may bother cleaning it, if not it won't get anything beyond a boresnake for quote some time. It's a .22, enjoy shooting the he11 out of it cheaply...that's the whole point.

Thanks for the advice guys. Picked up a boresnake and some mags today.

I'll definitely inspect the receiver, bolt and barrel. Get rid of any paint chips and burrs that I can, and degrease if needed. Also run a dry patch through the barrel with a 4mm CF rod I have from RC planes.

So rem oil, fp-10? any clear winner for a 10/22 for lubrication and rust prevention?

I am new to the 10/22 platform but a gun user/owner for many years. You will find MANY different opinions on lubrication and rust prevention, and I am by no means an expert.

Rem Oil or FP-10 should be fine. You might also want to look at MilCom TW2-25b, SLIP2000 or Froglube too. The really dedicated shooters at my local range love Kroll Oil with their target rifles.

I personally switched from MilCom TW-25b synthetic lube (plus Shooter's Choice bore cleaner or Hoppes Elite) to Frog Lube about a year ago in my AR and 22 bolt action rifle. TW-25b works great so nothing against it, but it is only a synthetic lubricant.

I wanted a single product to do everything. FrogLube is a CLP and works remarkably well for me in the AR, so I figure it will work great in the 10/22. Froglube is edible and doesn't burn your skin or damage organs like some solvents (I don't have to wear gloves or keep the room well ventilated when cleaning). It smells like BenGay. AND once the rifle is Froglubed, you should never need to use a cleaner again.

It may not be the best solution but that's my story.

            Fatcat,
Thanks for the weblink. Interesting. I have lots to learn about the 10/22 platform.

Froglube and Mpro7 is about all I will use ever again.

Don't know if it is true but supposedly Mpro7 and Hoppes Elite may use the same or a very similar formulation. I did like Hoppes Elite as a cleaner but never tried the Mpro7.

Thanks for all the advice, this is a great forum and resource for new gun owners like me

I picked up my 10/22 today. Put it in a cheap Plano case that I locked with two locks. Unfortunately the case is too long for me to fir into my trunk. I know I can have it the locked case the cabin even in school zones, but I would much rather have it in the trunk and out of sight. So time to get a shorter case.

Upon inspection and removal of trigger group, I saw that the factory was a little overzealous on oiling it. I could not get the bolt pin out, so could not clean it today, but I did wipe off as much excess as I could. Was thinking of using Hoppes on what I could reach for now, but don't have any rust preventer really, just a silicone cloth.

Now I need to get some tech sights (tsr-100) and decide whether to use the ATI dragunov stock or m1 carbine conversion and dual magazine clips for looks.

I am interested in this combo. Currently using mpro7 as cleaner and clp as lube...what guns are you using mpro7 and frog lube on and what is your cleaning regimen with them?
