dry fire a savage mark 2

on the rim fire forum somebody was worried because he dry fired savage 22. so what ????. never herd this being a problem.

Its east to break a firing pin when it does not have the casing to crush. It will slam against the harder bolt and possibly shatter. Just fyi it never a good idea to dry fire and fire arm with out snap caps

It also tends to peen the edge of the chamber. After a while this can cause feeding and extraction problems.

My dad gave me a Mossberg 402 (WesternField 865) lever action .22 when I was 12 years old. Nice rifle, but it doesn't have an external hammer so the only way to de-cock it is to pull the trigger.

After over 40 years of dry firing it to de-cock it, the chamber got peened so badly it couldn't extract fired rounds any more. I had to pry them out with a screwdriver.

I finally got around to fixing it so It works nicely now. I just leave it cocked after use.

The mark 2's are designed so dry firing wont hurt it. The firing pin is tall and designed to hit the barrel well away from the chamber. But it is still metal smacking metal so while doing it occationally wont cause damage, I wouldnt sit there all day and practice dry firing.
