You're definitely right on this loader, just watched the youtube video and this is a MUST for a Marlin 60 owner. I will be ordering one tonight through Cabelas.

    Thanks for the info..

The question was prompted by a recent incident at the range with a guy and his kid shooting winchester model 62 pump, built in the 30's. THe guy fired his last round and racked it a couple of times then pulled the trigger to let the hammer down and the empty gun went off. The rifle was pointed down range so it was an non issue. But it scared the hell out of the guy and changed my thinking about getting a tube fed .22.
The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. I'm glad no one got hurt in the incident you cited.

And now I need to go check out those Spee-dee loaders... ahh, more things to spend $$$ on...

The Marlin will allow you to lock the slide back by pushing in the bolt handle. Lock the slide back, then look to verify there are no more rounds in it. Most have a brightly colored followers to help. Seeing is believing.

That said, I LOVE the Marlin .22LR rifles. I have a Model 60 and a Model 75C, which is a shorter version of the Model 60. They are a high quality rifle at a moderate pice. They are reliable and accurate. They should be a part of everyone's collection. Excellent rifle for new or novice shooters. I also have a Browning lever and semi-auto tht are tube fed. I've never had a concern with any of them.

I am SLO a big fan of the Ruger 10/22 rifles.

It should also be noted that you should never intentionally allow the hammer to fall on an empty chamber on most .22s. The firing pin will ultimately damage the face of the chamber from doing so.

I only have one tube-fed .22, my Wards Western Field No 47a/Mossberg 45a. To verify empty I pull the cap off the tube (attached to the spring and follower) and tip it over to remove any rounds.
Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.

I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.

HAA! Well I'll be doggone! That's exactly the rifle I shot the chunk out of the fireplace with, a Winchester 62A! Think mine was from the 40's.

Also the single most inaccurate gun I've ever owned or shot in my life. Posibility some of these are retired 'Gallery Guns' from years ago when traveling carnivals had shooting galleries. The bore of the guns was reamed out and crown fouled plus inconsistent ammo [22 short or worse] so they'd be inaccurate and you'd never win the prize. Also saw barrels that were crooked as a dog's hind leg, probably driven over a couple of times, that bad! "$$$ care to take another try there, Deadeye...?"

And that is precisely how I ended up shooting a piece out of the fireplace, even after tapping the muzzle on a carpeted floor several times to encourage any stragglers to fall out! No guarantee there that it's empty unless you can visually or mechanically prove for sure that it's empty on a tube feed.

Edited to add: the reason it doesn't guarantee empty is because of the bullet-shaped loading hole in the old Winchester 62 magazine tube. When dumping shells out one can hang up on that cutout, cocked at an angle inside tube, and go unnoticed until one reinserts feed tube and you then hear a loud bang!

I wasn't exactly complete there. I still open the action and visually check after putting the tube back together (so I can see the follower).

I suggest occasionally swabbing tubes out so you don't get stragglers though.

I found a Marlin Model 25 online. I think I will be going with that rather than the Marlin 60..

Also, is anyone a fan of the Winchester Wildcat? Comes with 4 mags

Guy at my local pawn shop has one for sale for $200.

Understood, GS, thanks! Just didn't want anybody getting hurt.
