Troubleshooting a Ruger 10/22

My uncle brought over his Ruger 10/22. It won't cycle anything, we tried several types of ammo.

When I disassembled the gun I noticed the guide rod(if that's what you call it) is real stiff unlike the videos I've seen online of people disassembling 10/22's and putting them back together. If I manually cycle the gun after a jam the spent casing flies right out. Could it still be the extractor?


Any ideas on what the problem could be? Anyone experience this before?

that bolt has been worked over (or looks like someone was trying to jewel it)so its hard to say ... personally i would just order up a new extractor and ejector and replace them, also what kinda bolt stop does it have orig pin or a rubber/plastic one , the buffers always gave me issues i stick with the orig pins ...

bolt stop is the large pin at the end of the bolt travel..... looking at that last pic

looks like its a ejector issue, check the ejector in the trigger group

Ok then, yea it's original metal not plastic/rubber.

Yes, rifle is properly lubed. I cleaned it, lubbed it, went outside, shot a few rounds then I took the pictures. I cleaned it first to ensure it wasn't just shooting stupid because it was super dirty or something.

Sounds like I'll be doing that for sure even though the extractor doesn't look beat up at all. I can assure you though, it's shot quite a few thousands of rounds so it must be time to change the ejector.

I've had issues like that with 10/22's and MkIIs. The Volquartsen Edge fixed 'em all!

I replaced the charging handle assembly thingy, the extractor assembly(spring plunger and extractor) and also the ejector. Still jams. Any advice?

Could it be the magazine? maybe a real ****ty stock?

While we may have a worn extractor, I would like to know what magazine you are using.

Depending on the gun and the magazine brand, the feedlips can sit high or low relative to the bolt.
A mag that is too high may result in the top round still in the mag bumping the extracting fired case out of the extractor, leading to a stovepipe jam.

Looks to be a fairly new (clean) Butler Creek in the third pic.
Have you tried any other mags (especially the original Ruger rotary mags)?

Stock and 10 round magazine are both butler creek.

I ordered some Ruger brand magazines should be here sometime early next week.
