Any Savage 64 owners in here?

Okay so I've posted in here comparing the Marlin 795 and the Remington 597 and now I'm throwing in Savage 64! It doesnt help that this weeks Big 5 add has the 64 on sale in combo 4x15 scope package. Im sorry all but the more I read reviews and hope people love each rifle i just wish i could get some personal feed back not just words that have been edited to give favor to one or the other. Let it fly good bad and ugly. I can take it.

I have the Savage 64. Great rifle so far. It was a Christmas present for my 12 year old son. I got it from Turners in November for $109. (before taxes and dros). But that was just the rifle and not the rifle/scope package that Big 5 has right now so I can't speak to how good the scope is.

Let me first start with, “I love this rifle”. For inexpensive shooting and plinking purposes, I starting shopping for a 22LR rifle. The Ruger 10/22 appears to be the most popular with endless aftermarket parts available. The base model 10/22 is about $290 OTD and my first glance at one was an eye sore. It’s outright ugly and looks like a cheap air gun. I could see myself instantly replacing everything except the action. So let’s do the math; a nice replacement stock would run about $170.00 and a threaded replacement barrel with a muzzle brake is about $230.00. So far, $690.00 OTD for a nice custom 10/22. Then I came across a Savage 64 TRR-SR 22LR and it instantly caught my eye. The base model comes with and awesome tactical looking stock and a threaded/fluted bull barrel. It even comes with a scope rail on top of the action. There is nothing to replace on a Savage 64 TRR-SR to have a competitive 22LR and all this for only $250.00 OTD. I couldn’t pass it up and jumped on it. I added a nice 6-24x44 mil-dot scope, one piece scope mount, bipod, and muzzle brake, that totaled about $250.00. For under $500, I got myself a very nice, tactical looking, 22LR rifle and I took some great pictures to prove it. And to share a little about the performance, it shoots 3 inch groupings at 100 yards. Perhaps 2 inch groupings with a better shooter. Not a bad plinker at 100 yards. Oh ya, it comes with single stack magazines which is far more reliable than the 10/22 box mags. Readers, believe me when I say this is any awesome rifle for the price.

I had a savage 64 about 10 years ago. Overall it was a fun little rifle. My only issue with it was I would get light hits on the ammo once in a while. If I remember right I changed the firing pin which fixed the problem. I now have a marlin 795. Overall they are pretty equal except I think I would give the edge to the 64 in the sight department. It had a front sight that was easier to see than the marlin.
As for the scope combo at Big 5 the scope on the rifle is about a $10 scope just so you know. They sell similar scopes at walmart.

The scope on the 64fxp is kind silly really Tasco 4x15 but it will be replaces with a world class 3-9x32 much more suitable for this gun. Im still happy with my decision. I just wanna find out what it likes to shoot.

I have one, overall a fun rifle, bought mine 5 years ago at Big 5, replaced the scope for a Barska "Plinker" 4x36, two extra magazines and a sling and haven't made any changes yet. So far I have shot at least 2,000 to 2,500 rounds with some light hits on American Eagle bulk pack. Shooting squirrels, accuracy has been better than a 10/22 out of the box, most likely due to longer barrel

I've got one that has somewhere around 20k rounds through it. Don't even bother mounting the scope it comes with, and the stock rear sights are a joke. With a BSA 3x9 I've shot it out to 200 yards just to have fun and I think it shoots alot better then my other 22's. The only thing I don't like about it is the magazines don't seem to last very long, I'm on the 5th or 6th set of magazines already.

Wow. Thanks for the input all I plan on keeping this rifle for some time and if Savage has the quality I've come to expect then this rifle will do just fine.
Anyone notice a particular brand of ammo theirs likes? Im fond of the remington golden my self for my henry but my 993fvss like fiocchie or however you spell it.

                    Ogre8472,

I'm much sure the Savage is an excellent rifle for your battery. It has a longer barrel to reach out and using hyper velocity rounds it a good varmint round/rifle. The way 223 amo is these days I'm almost wondering if I should get back into 22 rimfire shooting again. Since there's a BIG 5 store real close to me I wish they had the stainless steel version! I'd get one n a heart beat!

                      Thanks Mail Clerk,
I was hopeing to find one in the bull barrel but ever dealer i asked said they need to order it and the price was way higher than i was willing to pay. (Darn markup) But im counting the days to have this new addition and break it in.
Speaking of that...ive never broken in semi-auto befor. I was just planning on putting rounds down range and give it a good clean afterward...lol
