need some help on a gun value

Hey guys, im looking to trade a pistol for a .17 rifle. here is the guy's description of it: have a 17 Mach 2 ,it's a marlin wood stock with a bull barrel it has a burress scope and a bipod..any idea on a ball park value for me to base negotiations on? He values it around 500. Thank you very much, you guys seem to have much knowledge regarding rimfires. Adam

I'd say that he's overvaluing his rifle a little bit. You can pick up a new Marlin in 17hmr for a few hundred. Of course, he may be valuing his rifle higher because it is 17hm2 and therefore a bit more rare. There's a reason for that -- in the 17hmr vs 17hm2 battle the 17hmr round came out on top. Ammunition will be much easier to find, for example last time I was at Sportsmans Warehouse they had several brands of 17hmr with a couple of offerings each. They had one kind of 17hm2. Walmart doesn't even stock 17hm2.

    Link for your consideration.

I wouldn't pay more than $200-$250 for it.

          17hmr is a 22 magnum necked down to 17. 17hm2 is a 22lr necked down.
