marlin model 39m article II date

I just got it from my grandpa. It survived a fire and still looks pretty good for what happened.very minor smoke damage but nothing I can't fix. The bore looks good and the rifling is still strong. I'm trying to figure out what year it was made. I've looked around and can't figure it out. It is marked No 37***... if that's not enough info I can give you more any help would be appreciated thank you

If you mean that "No 37***" is the serial number using the 100 - first 2 numbers = date system puts it at 1963 which would be wrong because they did not use the 100-number in 63. Does your rifle have a Letter or two in the serial number? like A or AA

BTW is it 20 or 24 inch barrel if its the 20 then its the highly sought after Mountie Carbine model.

It is a lever gun. Couldn't tell you on the barrel length ill have to check when I get back home. No 2 in the serial number. The serial number is marked exactly like this "No 37***". I used the oldguns website and it said it was made in 1890 but I'm pretty sure it wasn't called the "model 39m article II" back in 1890... I'm stumped honestly

Wasn't sure what you meant by Article II so I looked it up seems it was a 100 year commemorative edition for the NRA around 1971-3?

The 39A and 39M Article II’s were made to commemorate 100 years of the NRA in 1971. I assume Article II refers to the second amendment to the constitution. They have a medallion on the side of the receiver. The fore-hand cap and the crescent butt plate are brass . They have an octagon barrel. They are very similar to the Century limited. The difference is there were only 6,265 39A Article II’s and 3,824 39M Article II’s where there were 34,197 Century Limited’s.

Yes the Century Limited was made in 1970 and the Article II's in 1971. Then in 1972 they made the 39M Octagon and the 39A Octagon. There were 2,551 39A Octagons and 2,140 39M Octagons. The next Octagons were the 1897's made in the late 1990 to early 2000's.

Does yours have an octagon barrel?

Disregard my last post I didn't keep reading. It does have an octagonal barrel and the brass butt player if I remember correctly. Whys the difference between the century limited and the other?

so i took pics of it before i cleaned it up but havent taken after pics yet. give me a bit and i will have them up. what do you think the value of this one is? i'm never going to sell it. it means to much to me. so its the model 39m article II with the 20" octagonal barrel, straight stock, brass butt plate and fore end cap and with the squared lever. pics real soon....

First of all, that is a terrific lever and is a limited production Marlin from 1971. As for value, I've got a line on one in SoCal asking $500. I think that is a good deal as I have seen them on the national auction sites for $600 plus.

Shoot it and enjoy...with a little care, it should last you a long time.
