    GSG 1911 issues and questions

Finally got a chance to take my brand new GSG 1911 out the other night and ran into quite some issues. Before I went, I made sure I cleaned off factory lub inside out and lubricated all moving parts with hoppe gun oil.

    1. Almost every magazine, there would be 1 or 2 failure to feed rounds. The nose of the round will get stuck on the upper rim of chamber.

    2. Sometimes, the next round in magazine is not picked up and chambered when it sits flat in the magazine instead of nose tilted upwards.

    3. Extractor seems to be hitting the slide. If I were to let go of the slide slowly, I can feel the hipcup when extractor touches slide. Does anyone have experience the same?

    4. After about 350 rounds, the my slide is badly scratched. I'm not sure what's scratching it or how it's scratched, as I don't have a high speed cam. Does anyone experience the same? Or do you know what might be the reason? Please see red circled areas.

I was shooting walmart federal 550 bulk ammo and remington 550 golden bulk. Both would give me the same problem.

I contacted ATI and requested to send in my magazine and get a replacement one, they want me to send in the whole gun and said turn around time would be about 1-2 months for warranty repair. I opted for getting some replacement magazine follower to be sent to me and try them out first.

While I'm waiting for mag follower from ATI, I bought 2 factory mags online. The marking on them is differnt from the one that came with the gun. Please see pic attached. Does anyone know what it means? Gen1 and Gen2 mags?

I would really appreciate if you can share your input with me.

Give this a look - a ton of GSG 1911 info.
There is a thread that was started by one the Reps at ATI - although I don't know if he is still following that thread.

Discuss other popular 1911 manufacturers not listed..In memory of Jim Vollink who shared his vast knowledge, experience and dedication to all things gun related. I took mine out the other day after the thread where the slide split just to make sure it still runs okay. I am not happy with that pistol at all. Mine is feeding okay now after about 550 rounds. But it doesn't cycle smoothly and is not accurate at all. It will spend most of its life sitting in the safe. All three of my rugers run better and are much more accurate. I don't have the same wear you are showing on yours but it does seem to get beat up pretty easy. The slides are just garbage on these pistols.

I did go to 1911forum and asked over there, didn't get much useful response. So I was hoping calgunners here may have more first hand experience and can give me some advice.

Load 7~9 rounds until it runs with out FTF. Than bump it up to 10. That was the only way I got mine to run the first trip out. That is also why its only been out 3 times...

Did you contact ATI about it? What do they have to say?

That's funny, the exact same thing started happening to my GSG yesterday. I will definitely follow this one..

Haven't contacted them, it's very low on my list of things to get looked at or fixed.

wow, sorry to hear that you are disillusioned with your gsg. I hve put 4000 through mine and for the most part love it. First thing is the ammo you are using are among the worst possible, most say golden bullets don't work well and many also say that the federal value packs are not as good as they use to be. A 40 grain round nosed bullet with 1200 fps + seems to work best when pistol is new but later it will run anything. CCI blazers and the Winchester M22 are great. The scratching on the slide just looks like marks from ejecting casings.
You are right the tenth round needs to be pointing up to feel properly. The inaccuracy seems problamatic with the pistol design. The barrel retention screw will constantly back out a little making the barrel loose affecting accuracy. I have tried loctite and teflon tape to keep the screw tight with little luck.

I think Hen summarized it best.

The ammo choice is something that needs to be considered. I have had success Federal packs (Red & Blue), Remington GB, & CCI. Im cheap, I buy cheap ammo.
The ammo also needs to be lined up correctly in the mag when you load it, if one of the rounds is to sharp of an angle it will cause a FTFeed like your picture shows.
Here’s a picture of one of the rounds that didn’t load properly awhile back:

Notice the where the bullet and casing meet, the bullet is starting to “peel” off - crappy ammo.

2nd: The GSG is not a Ruger .22 Target. - I won’t say anymore on that because I already have.

3rd: The finish on this gun is CHEAP - it will scratch, just look @ my recoil spring plug:

Once you hit a couple thousand rounds it’s not going to be nice and shiny and pretty and “new looking” - its going to look like a used pistol.

I haven’t experienced the extractor issue you speak of, that might be something that needs to be greased/oiled or warrantied. Maybe you can post some pictures of the extractor?

Im also not sure about the magazine number difference. I will give a closer look and take pics of my mags when I get a change, but briefly looking over my crappy pics some of my mags have the number, some don’t. All run as fine as can be for me.

Which ammo did you use? I have yet to try some round nose ammo. Plan to buy a box of CCI blazer to try it out.
