597 v.s. 795

Okay let me start out with Ive seen the love for the Marlin in here and for the Remington in other forms but Im in the market for one and I would like some insight on these rimfires befor I pull the trigger. Lol.
Im not into modifications so I'm probably just going to ignor the 10/22 from now on as it seem you need to modify it to get anything useful out of it.
I've had a chance to shoot both of these rifles lately and the owners had nothing but good things to say about them. If you've had good or bad times with one or both please feel free to write something. Thanks all!

The 795 was a present to me when I graduated from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.

I can't remember it malfunctioning in the past 11+ years. Mainly shot Remington Golden Bulk 22lr out of it.

Its accurate, cheap (esp w/ rebates), and thats all that matters to me.

I like the Remington 597 cuz it pretty easy to take apart and clean. The bolt is nickle plated for durability and overall a fantastic rifle if you can understand it and get past it's negatives. Once thing I must note to you is it's barrel accuracy is not what has been claimed in the past and youur better off replaceing th barrel like I had to do. Now it's a tack driver. The Marlin 795 I on't know anything about but I have there olt actions which is accurate using the right ammo.

I went to my Brownells catalog. I know there's not much out there compared to Ruger but some are out there for purhase. This project was about 8 years ao so by now I'll bet replacement barrels are in more variety.

Barrels for this rifle are out of stock everywhere and they don't seem to get more in stock either. I see why you found one as it was 8 years ago. Its a good rifle just wish they continued to produce parts for it.

Okay. Ive asked the two friends with the 597 and the 795. Both of them bought their rifles over 12 years ago. Neither one has had any major problems. I guess its the newer stuff most people are referring to with the accuracy and other problems. Grr that just made this much more difficult.

I bought a 795 for my grandaughter. Haven't tried a bunch of ammo brands in it but it definitely has feeding problems with Winchester and Blazer. I'm going to polish the feed ramp and see if that helps. It's finish is pretty crude with a casting line down the center.

I can personally confirm that rimfires are picky eaters. My Savage 93fvss is the easiest to please. Maybe because its made well or the manufacturers put more care into the 22mag ammo. But most every other rimfire I've had needed a diet of one kind of ammo or a nother.
Im willing to go threw and find out what ever rifle i end up getting likes. Its just part of the rimfire life.

Im starting to lean towards the Remington 597. The clean lines and the fact that the mags sit flush with the bottom. If anyone has one they might be willing to part with let me know.

I have a 597 and the barrel it came with was larger than .22 and accuracy was horrible, i put a lead round down the barrel and there was barely any rifling on the round. I had to put a used barrel on it that i was fortunate to find on gunbroker. Now it is pretty accurate. I am still thinking of giving it up and going for a tricked out 10/22.

It was kinda last minute decision. The factory barrels accuracy was dismal at best no matter the brand of ammo so I went to Brownells and got the last of a Voltquartsen stainless steel barrel. Putting it on was a breeze and the accuracy went way up to say the least. I also put on a stock meant for it as well so now instead of a carry around rifle it's more of a bench rest rifle now.

One thing I did notice about the trigger mechanism is that if you continue to use it develops it's own trigger job. I put just a little dab of grease under neath the sear engagement and the pull is so sweet!

I've got a newer (bought three years ago) 597 and the accuracy isn't very good compared to a stock 10/22. I haven't shot the 795 so I can't judge the difference.
