    youth sized rimfire suggestions ...

i am looking for a "youth" .22 for my middle child's B-Day and was looking at the crickett/chimpmunk but really wanting a mag fed bolt for them, but i dont know of any so turning to the CalGunners for suggestions on this topic

some of the plus's i have on the Crickett is of course the youth stock, internal lock(havnt seen how it works but like the idea on a child's gun), and the price is right at 120.00 only neg i have is its not mag fed

So what say ye is there any youth sized mag fed bolt guns out there ?

CZ452 Scout is for small shooters and is $288 at Bud's. I'm pretty sure you could put an adult stock on it later but I'd confirm with CZ before spending any money.

Savage has the Mark II GY (or GLY for lefties) for $188 at Bud's.

Either way I'd have them use a single shot adapter at first because it entourages making every shot count. It's the way my grandfather taught me at age 4.

Try a Marlin xt-22 yr. Picked one up for my 5yr old at Sportsmans Warehouse for around $199. Came with magazine and single shot block. Stock can be changed as kid grows

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're still not out to get me!!!

Optionally, you could get a 10/22 and cut the stock down, then just get another stock later.

already on that building a couple from 80%, but want the kids to start out learning with a bolt action, less of a chance of a accidental shots or bumpfire from the bench

Well, I do have a Marlin Little Buckaroo I might part with, but it's a single-shot.

I have 2 crickets 1 for the boys and a pink one for the girls. I thought they would be great starter guns, very small, easy to carry and very safe. However with that said they are a bit crude, and my kids tired of them quickly. I don't like the lock because it is too easy to lock it unintentionally, the trigger is very tuff to pull and the cocking mechanism is hard to pull back.
Personally I would go another route. All of my kids now shoot a Ruger 10/22.

When do you move from youth size to a full size? I'd like to get my daughter started, and was leaning toward a CZ. She is a very petite 12 year old. At what point has a child outgrown something like a CZ Scout? A Scout has LOP of 12", as opposed to 13 3/4" for the 452 (they don't list LOP for the 455 on the CZ web site). Also, the weight is about 5 lbs versus 6 lbs for the larger rifle -- although she is very strong, she's a gymnast.

My daughter is 12 and is about 5'1". She handles my 10/22 fine.

There are full sized adults over on rimfirecentral.com that shoot the CZ Scout and love it . Although not mag fed, have you considered a Henry Lever Action Youth rifle? Just another option.

A 10/22 with an adjustable stock is a good option. You'll both be able to use the same weapon. ATI makes a stock that similar to the M4 style. Blackhawk makes one even lighter that collapses down to 9.5" LOP. I'd post a pic if I had any tech savvy, but I don't. I started my girls on the BB gun at age 4, then went to the 10/22 at age 5 after they could TELL ME the rules of gun safety. (something we repeat every range session) Only problem was the trigger pull. So I pulled the trigger assembly and stoned down the hammer & sear engagement area and put it back in with tighter pins. I only smoothed it down enough to take out the gritty feeling and drop maybe a half pound from the pull, but that was enough. You can repeat this later once you feel safety has been mastered and just want a better trigger. Don't know how? brasstard has a really good page with all the pics that I don't know how to make. Check it out.
As far as loading goes... get a few snap caps. Use them like spacers in the mag loading. For single shot, load every other round as a snap cap, for doubles, triples, etc. load as needed. This will provide automatic practice in some of the other skills too.
9mm and 45acp are equally lousy. There's not a dime's worth of difference in REAL terminal ballistics. Get over it.

Another possibility is the rossi youth .22/.410 model. It's single shot, accurate, easy to operate and has one little glitch....remember it only weighs 3.5 pounds before you let your youngster try the .410 barrel. Shoot it yourself and see what i mean. A slip on recoil pad would be highly recommended for the .410 usage. I had one for my wife for awhile. She has an issue with her right hand and had trouble pulling the hammer back after just a few shots. Might be a little stiff if your youngster is really young.

I have an ATI strikeforce stock on a 10/22 for her now. It is really adjustable and we got her perfectly fitted. Another possibility.

What about the Ruger SR22P? Seems perfect for a young shooter starting out:

Savage "Rascal" but it's a single shot.
