I stopped by my buddy's house (who I thought hated guns) and he pulled out an old rifle for me to check out. Stamped on the barrel is "JC HIGGINS MODEL 103.18" which google has informed me is basically an early Marlin model 100. The barrel has obvious rust on the outside and we're not even sure if it can function properly, although it seems to. Does anyone know where I can find any info on stripping it down and getting it fixed up? I don't have too much experience with Marlins so I'm not sure how to take it apart exactly. I'm a little frightened to see the internal parts given that the barrel is rusting on the outside...

Remove the stock and you might be surprised. Sometimes ine moving mechanical parts are still functional. Before you do anytihing I'd check to see if the bore is still shiney or at least frosted. Then I'd have a smith look at it to replace any crucial parts like springs and extractors and such. Expect to spend some money for smithing work but only if you know parts are still available.

this might get you started, at least to see all the parts.
