My wife and went to the range today and took three .22lr guns: Marlin 795 rifle, Henry's AR-7 rifle, and a Sig Mosquito. She is fairly new to firearms and my larger caliber guns scare her a bit. A few months of no-recoil shooting should help.
Two of the three guns are well known for being picky with ammo (the handgun and the AR-7), so I wanted to see if there were gun-related issues as well. Testing with two variables complicates things, but I am not attempting to be scientific.
Three types of rounds:
* CCI round nose - 40 grain - 1235 FPS
* CCI hollow point HP - 36 grain - 1260 FPS
* Remington Golden Bullet value pack - 36 grain - 1280 FPS
We put maybe 50 rounds of each through each gun.
Results: the CCI round nose had no failures of any kind in 150 rounds, the CCI hollow-point worked well in two of three guns and OK in the third with some failures to load. It was the AR-7 that had the issue only near the end of our shooting, it was getting stuck on the feed ramp once it got dirty and a little polishing may be in order. A drop of oil after each 100 rounds may also do the trick.
The Remington Golden Bullets SUCKED, with failures of every variety from FTF to FTE one out of every five rounds or so. Feedback I have read on this particular round goes from "best ever" to "worst ever", so all I can think is that their QC is horrible and I have a bad batch.
I can conclude from this that the 795 and Mosquito do not appear to be terribly sensitive about ammo, because they both failed equally with each type of ammo (i.e. zero, zero, and often). The AR-7 seems to be sensitive to the shape of the bullet, but other than that it failed like the others.
I also have a box of Remington Thunderbolt (40 grain, 1255 FPS) and will try that next.
On a separate note, the trigger on the AR-7 is horrible (like a cheap kid's toy) but my accuracy with that gun at 25 yards (hey, we were indoors) was on par with the 795 - freehand with iron/plastic sights I shot 3" groupings. Any way to improve the AR-7 trigger?
