M&P 15-22 Went sour this weekend

So first outing was fantastic. 200+ rounds or so with maybe a 1 or FTL and no FTF.
This weekend I took my son to the range and had every other shot jam in the chamber. Literally you would shoot 1 then the next round would jam and be facing straight up in the chamber. Clear the jam and the next one would fire but round after that would jam the same way.

Mags loaded as I always load so not sure it was mag releated.

Took the gun home and cleaned and lubed it. There was quite a bit of black buildup on the front of the extractor. Hope that will fix the issues as I did not have time to head back after cleaning. Does everyone clean after 200 rounds??

Found great reviews on these so I order 1500 rounds from Midway yesterday. They say specifically designed for 15-22 so we'll have to see.

You should consider sending it back to S&W and have them fix it. I had a 'kaboom' on mine also within the first few hundred rounds (ruptured case due to poor feeding, no harm to the gun) and S&W took care of it.

Not a single failure since then, thousands of rounds later.

Google for "15-22 ejector fix" if you want to try something yourself first. Basically you just bend the ejector toward the bolt so that it is almost touching it, but not dragging.

However to me it sounds like you have stiff springs, and S&W replaces the springs as part of the warranty work.

I would send the gun in for repair. I have a GSG-5, Colt M4, and the SIG 522. I have only cleaned these guns very superficially and all have a couple of thousand rounds throught them with only the occassional failure to fire, which I blame on the ammo, not the gun.

What kind of ammo are you using?

There is either something wrong with the ammo you are using or your gun is defective. I would stick to CCI Blazers since they are one of the better bulk ammo.

Only using CCI Mini Mags since day one. Mine 15-22 is a newer version with the updated "blue" springs from S&W (supposedly the fix for earlier versions). It's also the "performance center" version which has some do not use ammo referenced in the manual.

They first boxes used were all CCI Mini-Mag High Velocity Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 36 Grain Plated Lead Hollow Point from Midway. I did buy a box of CCI Mini Mags at the range. I'll have to check the box from the range as maybe the range ammo was different or old or both??

I've had one weird malfunction like yours some months ago with a new shorty 10-rounder. The round was sticking straight up, caught in the magazine's lips. That was the only time it did that. I just chocked it up as 'stiff springs' so I compressed and released it a few times before shooting again and no problems. Don't send it in or modify the extractor yet, wait for another session.

I love CCI .22lr. I keep getting the CCI Blazer 525(&500) packs on sale so that's what I've been buying a lot lately but I would shoot the CCI mini-mags frequently.

i have used nothing but blazers in mine, and i have over 10k rounds thru it and cleaned it maybe 3 times but i run it pretty wet. never had a ftl or ftf. how are you loading? i know if u are using the shorty mags and u just drop all the rounds in there that could cause ftf.

You shouldn't have any problems with CCI mini mags. You will need to send it in for repair..

broke the gun in with 500rnds of mini mags, then nothing but blazers after that. Had some jams at first but it seem to work itself out. I now have two long clips, and 4 short clips.

M&P 15-22 Update

I wanted to update my post. We just got back from Reed's after shouting 400 rounds of the new CCI AR Tactical .22lr

This stuff is amazing. Loaded my 8 mags as normal and not a single FTL or FTF or FTE. I think my problems have been solved. Not sure if cleaning or the new ammo or both fixed my problems from last weekend but left the range a happy camper.

Same thing happened to me this weekend at appleseed I ended up switching to a ruger. it was running fine on the first day then day 2 stovepipes double feeds I will have to give it a nice clean.

I know right! I looked at EVERY Dealer in the SF Bay Area and online. Then on a whim walked into Target Masters. I never go there because . . . well lets just say I never go there.

Low and behold it's sitting under glass. Now it's in double jail. I put a deposit to hold it 12 days until my 1 in 30 is up, then I have to start the 11 day wait (yes they hold them for 11 days)

Can't wait to have the pair.

Well that's a come up man, makes me want to buy one now. Though I have never seen one in any SoCal shop, I haven't been looking.
