Looking at purchasing a 10/22 soon

When I was getting ready to buy, I heard that the blued is a little more smooth trigger pull, especially if you take the time to polish it. My friend, who had purchased a stainless, said that it was a bit "gritty"? Anyway, I went with blued and have no experience with the stainless to say otherwise.
Moot point though, I upgraded just about everything though.
I don't know if you've heard but the 10/22s can be picky about their ammo. I can shoot Walmart 22s no problem but for some reason CCIs never cycle for me. You may end up needing to experiment. I also found that the stock mags are the only ones that work for mine, too.
Have fun!Comment

Just get the cheapest base 10/22 you can find, that way you have more to spend on the replacement stock, barrel, trigger, etc to make it all your own! I've bought a few old used ones cheap just to make builds from.. Now I'm just going to do 80%s...Comment

In the same shoes as the OP, purchased a basic 10/22 yesterday from Dick's Sporting Goods for $241 out the door. Not even 24 hours yet and i've already ordered a adams and bennett heavy barrel as an upgrade. Ugh....------------------------------------------------------

Can any of you guys recommend a good affordable cleaning rod and bore guide if I need one? I heard that cleaning a new 10/22 barrel is crucial and I don't really have any experience cleaning rifle barrels. I know that you have to be careful with the barrel crown.

BTW Res I love how your 10/22 looks...is that the M1 carbine stock conversion? I think I will want to get one of those myselfComment

Thanks Brandon. Yes, its a drop in M1 stock I purchased from Brownell's along with tech sights. I've had it for about a week and cant wait to shoot it.
Cleaning kits:
I've heard nothing but great things about the Otis kits, but they are not cheap. You could get a general cleaning kit for around $25 then a 22 bore guide for about $8-10.
Otis uses a cable instead of a rod

Yeah I was looking at OTIS pull-through cleaning cables. They seem to be kinda expensive and usually come in a big kit. I just stumbled by this on Midwayusa: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/415...o-cleaning-kit
Seems to be exactly what I would need at an affordable price. They also have a .22-.30 cal one but the reviews say it doesn't work well on 10/22s because the hardware is too big to fit through ejection slot. This .17-.22 kit seems like it should work well though.
I am assuming that cleaning all other parts of the 10/22 can be done with standard gun cleaning supplies and cotton patches right? I am also planning on ordering a Volquartsen recoil buffer and I believe it's the only necessary right-off-the-bat mod I should have?

OK I am still new to the modding of this rifle, What is this for? I understand the buffer, Heck I even understand what it is intended to do.... What I don't get is no 10/22 came from the factory with one so why add it? Is it just a precaution? Is it to eliminate recoil? Here's a very good bolt buffer. With free shipping!

Re: cleaning...
I've been using a bore snake for these last 10 years and haven't had any problems.Comment

When you take down the 10/22 you'll see a pin in the back of the receiver that the bolt will smack into. The bolt is rounded to accommodate the shape of the pin so some people (me included) buy the buffer to cushion the bolt.OK I am still new to the modding of this rifle, What is this for? Sorry if I use the wrong terminology. I spend more of my time with the physical parts than learning their names

Nope it is all good. I know which pin you are referring to, it falls out if I look at it wrong. But what purpose does it serve? I understand cushioning the bolt is the reason people put it there. Where I get lost is why people are concerned with cushioning the bolt? Is this why my scope slowly inches forward? (I have not done this mod)
Hmm Me thinks a new thread is in order here
