    Marlin 795 scope rail

I bought both of my boys Marlin 795's for Christmas this year to get them some experience with the safe use of firearms. Both boys are very good shots and we really enjoy going to the range. My youngest used the open sights for a while and then wanted me to put on a scope for him, which was a simple procedure. My oldest, however, wanted a red dot sight placed. I purchased some "Quick Site" adapters so I could get the 5/8" weaver mounts of the red dot to match up to the 3/8" Marlin rail. With this setup it is not difficult to be accurate but getting a good cheek weld on the stock is more like a chin weld because the sight is elevated so much by the adapters. My question is has anyone heard of machining or grinding down the stock rail and drilling and taping for a 10/22 rail?

There is a Marlin 795 thread that may be more helpful . . .

Thats a whole lot of work when you could just get a buttstock cheek rest:

Or you could just cut up a foam swim noodle or pipe insulation to rise the cheek weld.

Remember kids grow fast, modifying guns to make them smaller to fit them is a bad idea.

are you using one of these:

        or the
3/8" Picatinny Scope Base from DIP -www.diproductsinc.com

either will raise the sight base a bit, but allow you to use med or low rings.

I would go with the UTG setup first, since it will allow you to move the scope forward a bit if needed.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I have thought about the adjustable cheek welds but I just hate the look of them. Good point about the kids growing very fast, but the distance is even to elevated for me to shoot the rifle without lifting my head off of the stock. Still love the gun though.
