CMMG 22LR conversion or dedicated upper/rifle

Hey guys, let me start by saying I'm sorry if this has been beat to death, but when i searched for a similar thread I could not find it...

What I am wanting is a 22lr rifle for me and my girlfriend to shoot inexpensively, and a lot, target practice/plinking mostely. Right now I'm wanting to keep it in the AR platform and have been looking at the S&W M&P 15-22, the CMMG stainless steel 22lr conversion, and a couple different dedicated 22lr uppers to put on one of the stripped lowers I have laying around.
Based on your experience, what do you guys think? I would like to keep cost low, however I want something that will shoot relatively accurately and reliably (considering its a 22lr). The CMMG conversion kit new is ~$190, which is almost 2/3 of the cost of a dedicated upper... So you all know, the AR i would use the conversion in is a BCM 16" carbine.

    thanks in advance

Your budget is going to be the deciding factor. All work. Love my 15-22. Dedicated upper is sweet though.

I've got 3 of the CMMG .22LR Dedicated uppers... They are all very reliable & accurate.

This weekend for example using CCI Blazers ($13/box of 500) from a rest I was grouping between just under 3/4" to 5/4" at 25yrs and around 2" at 50yrs. Keep in mind, this is ****ty ammo.

You will NOT get groups like that with a conversion bolt.

As I see it... A dedicated upper will cost you under $400... That means it will have paid for itself within 1.5-2k rounds fired in comparison to .223/5.56..

Also talk to shadow65 and see what he can do for you... He's helped get many CalGunners these uppers at good prices.

I have a Brownells .22 conversion bolt, it had about 100 round break in period but it now eats all the cheap .22 ammo I feed it. It has approximately 8,000 rounds through it and it functions flawless.

I was just at an appleseed this weekend, one of the shooters there had a CMMG conversion and was having a devil of a time with it.

The accuracy was okay (.223 was better), but he had the back plate break off and get rewelded (the week before) and the special no-jam charging handle snap in two pieces (during the event).

I'd seriously consider saving for a dedicated upper.

He should contact CMMG... They will fix all of those issues immediately. In fact, If he contacted them today he'd probably have a replacement by Friday. They have very good customer support and investigate the cause of such issues (but they have to have customers at least report them).

Contact Shadow65 here on this forum: He can get you the latest CMMG dedicated upper with the right options and right price. CMMG uppers have lifetime warranty.

Since you already have spare lowers the CMMG dedicated upper in 22LR is the way to go. You can get a working forward assist, bolt lockup use a true AR lower. The whole system works like a true AR.

Oh, it shoots good, real goood.... It even shoots those lousy Remington Golden bullets accurately.. But my preference is still CCI ammo for its cleaniless....

It would depend on what your budget is. If you can afford it I would go with a dedicated upper. You'll get much better groupings.

Get a hold of shadow65 he sells CMMG 22 uppers.

+1 for the dedicated upper if you already have a stripped lower. Maybe I'm just biased because I like the idea of having more guns though

I have a CMMG rimfire pistol upper... tons of fun.

I went dedicated. Lowers, LPKs, and buffer tubes are pretty cheap if you don't get too fancy.
