First time out with M&P 15-22

Thought I'd share my first time out with my new M&P 15-22. I'm new to firearms having just started my collection in Dec consisting of 2 Remington 870 Tacticles, an XD9 in OD Greeen and now the M&P 15-22.

I looked (briefly) at the Ruger 10/22 but wanted something a little more AR looking right out of the box. Held both the standard and Performance Center version. The stock and and grip on the PC version seemed much better and felt more ridged than the standard version. I will probably never shoot as good as the PC gun can shoot, but liked the fit and feel of the PC version over the Std.

Anyway first time out was great. My son and I went to Reed's Indoor Range yesterday before the game. Small crowd and only had to wait maybe 5 minutes to get a lane.

I had read that CCI Mini Mags were the best to use in the PC version to minimize FTL and FTF issues. My version has a DVUXXX serial number so it has the latest "blue" springs that fixed some earlier models that had issues.

The 10 round short mags seem to be a bit finiky to get the offset stacking needed to ensure consistant feeds. As I was loading the first and second mag the offset stacking got messed up as I was loading rounds 7-10. I think I'm taking too much pressure off the spring using the load assist buttons.

I had 2 FTL one each on the first 2 mags using CCI Mini Mag rounds. The first had bent the round right in the middle. Pulled the charging handle back and it cleared right away. The second bent/caught the round right were the casing ends. Also pulled and cleared easily.

Subsequent mags seemed to load better and we had zero FTLs or FTF after that. Went through 200 rounds total VERY fun.

Being new to .22, I think it was probably the way I loaded the mags. Next time I may load the mags at home (I have 6 mags) rather than rush at the shooting lane.

This is my version. CA Compliant, 10 round mag, no flash suppressor, no threaded barrel, mag release button. I got mine at the Gun Vault in Mountain View. I paid full retail but very happy with the purchase.

Nice. I also took out my mp-22 yesterday and was getting 1.5in groups with a simple barska red dot. This was all the way back at the indoor range (discount gun). Love this long gun!

I also picked up a Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 before Christmas... Mine is the standard version but I can say this.... The most fun one can have with their clothes still on!

I did go online and purchase some short mags and a grip pod... The longer mags get in the way I think... You are absolutely right... I had the same FTL and it is due to lack of spring tension. I found tapping the mag after loading and a quick check to ensure the rounds are offset solves that problem.

FTF is a way of life with the rim fire..I get a few every couple hundred rounds but at $.04 a round... No biggie...

The gun does get its share of attention and I'll let anyone give it a try... Very accurate and you are able to blast away all day for 20 bucks!

I put a Primary Arms Red Dot with AR riser (co witnesses lower 1/3 w iron sights) and am extremely pleased with the result...

All in all... Best buy I've made in years!

Haha, we must be brothers! I just got into guns this last November... I too have an XD9 in OD Green and just picked up an M&P 15-22 about a month ago

I have only had one outing with my 15-22, but I love it! I need to get more mags for mine (I only have 2 long ones and I want a couple shorts)... I went through about 400 rounds and didn't have any malfunctions though.

Love mine too! Last all day in the range without breaking the bank.

Great minds think alike . . . That OD Green XD9 just called to me from inside the glass case. Everyone has a black gun, no one has a green/black one.

At 49 my eyes are not what they used to be. My groupings are dollar sized. Not silver dollar size but those big fake dollars you get at the toy store that are 12" long.

I just went online and got this for mine. It had pretty good reviews:

If anyone is local to the San Jose / SF Area we should do a M&P 15-22 outing.

Soso, do you mind sharing what kind of riser you used? I have the same issue with my rifle.

                  VL221:

I bought a riser from Primary Arms:

Primary Arms features our own line of AR 15 and AK 47 parts, accessories, scopes, optics and red dot sights.

It works great and the Customer Service at PA is very responsive and helpful!

That's great that they had one in stock! I had to order mine and the guys there gave me such a hard time for wanting a green gun (just messing me, not a serious thing).... some people just don't understand

Congrats to the OP and other newer 15-22 owners, nice choice and GREAT FUN!

We've had one nearly two years, a few ammo related ftf, no feed issues (we run it pretty wet) and only a couple little changes. There was some old Remy stuff we used up that had some probs, it seems fine with federal and really likes the CCI.

For fun (and different ranges and types of training) we've run it scoped, red-dotted, stock irons, and right now it's got and old-school look AR carry-handle style rs on it.

My boy has run it at a couple carbine classes (dominated by AR's of course), and earned respect imo as the lil' rifle worked fine, has same controls as the AR and he shot well with it.

He likes the Hogue rubbery feel hg with the finger grooves better then the stock one. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/645...sting-_-645828

Learning here two years ago from another 15-22 shooter, we also slipped the yellow spring kit from JP into it, little nicer/lighter trigger feel (and works on our AR as well). Like $10 http://www.midwayusa.com/product/579...-reduced-power

                      hth, have FUN guys!

A day at the range with .22s is always cheap fun! Not only that, its the best way to become proficient without breaking the bank.

Congrats on the purchase, I am debating between a conversion kit for my AR or just picking up an MP15-22 from Big 5 myself!

I love my 15-22. My ar if not perfectly clean jams like no other. The 15-22 is good for a 1000 rounds straight. Seeing the grime in a .22 I would never put a conversion kit in my high $ AR if I ever needed it in an emergency.
